CARICOM, Kazakhstan sign support grant agreement

A US$770,000 grant support package will become available to Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States from the Republic of Kazakhstan to strengthen capacity in the areas of climate change and sustainable development.

CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque and Ambassador of Kazakhstan to CARICOM, H.E. Mr. Konstantin Zhigalov signed the agreement of financial support on Thursday 10 March 2016 at the Marriot Hotel, in Georgetown, Guyana, on the side-lines of the Fourth High-Level Donor Forum.

Community Institutions issue Joint Statement

The CARICOM Competition Commission (CCC) and the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA) have expressed concern about the new global threat of antibiotics resistance. In a Joint Statement issued on the occasion of World Consumer Rights Day to be observed on 15 March 2016, the CARICOM institutions explained the   associated  challenges and dangers of such resistance.

 

PANCAP Convenes Fourth Annual National AIDS Programme Managers and Key Partners Meeting

The Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP), in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Caribbean Office and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), will convene the Fourth Annual Meeting of National AIDS Programme Managers and Key Partners under the theme “Universal Access to HIV services in the Caribbean” at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad on 15-17 March 2016.

Dominica develops Draft National Agriculture Policy, Action Plan

The CARICOM Secretariat, under the Agriculture Policy Programme (APP), is financing the development of a Policy and Action Plan for the Commonwealth of Dominica’s agriculture sector. This process, which is being led by the Ministry of Agriculture of Dominica and an APP-supported local consultant, has, to date, developed a first draft document which will be the subject of validation meetings from 9 -11 March, 2016, in Dominica.

 

CARICOM, Australia strengthen ties

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Australia continue to strengthen an already rewarding relationship, which among other things, has seen 128 CARICOM nationals benefitting from major scholarship programmes and leadership awards.

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on Wednesday 9 March accepted the Letters of Credence from new Australian Ambassador  to CARICOM, Mr. John Pilbeam, at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana.

Saint Lucian Tertiary Students Head to Suriname

The CARICOM Secretariat is winding down the project ‘Students Engaging the CSME through Field Promotion’ with the first of the final three missions for 2016 getting underway this Monday, March 14. Nineteen Saint Lucian tertiary students from the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) and one CARICOM Youth Ambassador (CYA) are traveling to Suriname for the week-long mission. They are to be accompanied by Saint Lucia’s CSME Focal Point and a lecturer of the SALCC.

The United Nations observance this year will reflect on how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda to effectively implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the new global agenda to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
