Both men and women should promote gender equality – CARICOM DSG

She was speaking on Tuesday at a luncheon held in commemoration of International Women’s Day at the CARICOM Secretariat in Turkeyen, Guyana. The event was planned and executed by the CARICOM Secretariat Staff Association.

The Deputy Secretary-General said many changes were necessary for the empowerment of women but emphasized that men should be proud to support their female counterparts including their mothers, sisters, daughters and wives to make progress in life.

A call for more women in electoral processes

 On the eve of International Women’s Day, Deputy Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Ambassador Manorma Soeknandan has called for the increased involvement of women in the electoral processes.

She made the call to a group of senior officials in electoral management and monitoring who are participating in a CARICOM Secretariat-United Nations (UN) workshop on Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) which opened Monday 7 March at the Marriot Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana.

CARICOM SG congratulates new Jamaica PM

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has extended heartiest congratulations to newly elected Prime Minister of Jamaica, Mr. Andrew Holness.

“I look forward to working with you in continuing to strengthen our integration movement in the interest of the people of Jamaica and of the wider Caribbean Community, the Secretary-General said in his congratulatory letter.

Competition Sensitization for Judges Gets Underway

The CARICOM Secretariat pushes toward consolidating the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) with sensitization sessions for judges in competition law and policy. This Tuesday, March 8, the first of these workshops kicks off in Jamaica at The Court of Appeal. Seven judges of the court will be participating in the activity which is funded under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF). This is part of a larger project to assist Member States with improving their regulatory, administrative and institutional arrangements related to the single market.

CARICOM seeks Portugal’s advocacy on major concerns

As the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) continues to lobby for the removal of Member States from the list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions, Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on Friday raised the issue with newly accredited Ambassador of Portugal to CARICOM His Excellency Fernando Teles Fazendeiro.
