GUYANA-ENERGY-Guyana government issues statement outlining support for Amaila hydro project

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government Monday said that the total public debt for Amaila Falls is “zero” and insisted that there has been “considerable confusion” in recent weeks regarding the cost of the multi-million dollar project.
In a statement which the Donald Ramotar government said was aimed at “clearing this confusion” it said Guyanese citizens will pay for Amaila Falls in two ways.

GUYANA-VIOLENCE-Government “saddened” at loss of lives due to domestic violence

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government Monday said it is “deeply saddened” by the recent loss of lives and injury to several people as a result of domestic violence and urged the perpetrators to seek help through the various systems set up by the government and non-government organisations. Police last week reported that on two occasions last week, men have killed their wives and children following domestic disputes.

GUYANA-ENERGY-President appeals for opposition concerning Amaila Falls Hydropower project

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – President Donald Ramotar on Sunday appealed for an end to partisan politics surrounding the Amaila Falls Hydropower project. In a release on Sunday, the President said although the United States based investor, Sithe Global has pulled out of the project, there is still a window of opportunity and he has spoken with Opposition leader David Granger urging the support of APNU (A Partnership for National Unity). It was APNU’s non-support of two Amaila matters in parliament last week that led to the developer, Sithe Global quitting the project.

No change in our position

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has defended its position regarding the multi-million dollar Amaila Falls Hydropower Project (AFHP) even after president Donald Ramotar appealed for an end to partisan politics in the wake of the decision by the major United States investor to pull out. The US-based Sithe Global has said that it would only go ahead with its US$150 million investment in the US$850 million hydropower plant if all political parties in parliament supported the project.

GUYANA-LABOUR-Nurse strike in support of payment of gratuities

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) has accused the government of reneging on a promise to pay outstanding gratuities to nurses, who on Wednesday began strike action in support of their demands. Chairman of the GPSU branch at the Linden Hospital Complex, Winston Luke, said that the negotiations on the timely payment for the nurses had broken down and that an estimated 75 workers should have been paid GUY$6 million (One Guyana dollar = US$0.01 cents) with their March salaries.

CARICOM Change Team pleased with Guyana Consultations

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Change Facilitation Team based at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat has expressed satisfaction at the response by participants at the Guyana national consultations on a Five-year Strategic Plan for the Community. The Strategic Plan is a critical part of the Reform process within CARICOM, which has been initiated by the Conference of Heads of Government. 

GUYANA-DEVELOPMENT-Hugo Chavez Centre to open on the weekend

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - The Hugo Chavez Centre for Rehabilitation and Reintegration - a US$2 million project, funded by the Government of Venezuela is scheduled to open on Saturday.
The Centre located at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice, will be opened by President Donald Ramotar, and Venezuela’s Ambassador to Guyana   Reina Margarita Arratia Díaz.
The centre will accommodate 200 males and 100 females in separate dormitories and will include medical, recreational, kitchen, conference and dining facilities.

GUYANA-AGRICULTURE-US investors to use coconut water in energy drink

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC -The introduction of an energy drink with coconut water from Guyana as one of the key ingredients, is being conceptualised by American investors who met President Donald Ramotar on Wednesday. The product when manufactured will be sold to the high-end consumers in the United States using a marketing strategy to promote Guyana and the business of small coconut producers. The investors - George Papanastasatos and Marim Kinkladze, met President Ramotar and Allison Butters-Grant President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Connections Consultants Inc.

GUYANA-ENERGY-Private sector group comes out in support of Amaila hydro project

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Private Sector Commission (PSC) has come out in support of the Amaila hydro project that the Guyana government said would result in a 40 per cent reduction in the importation bill for fuel and provide more disposable income in the pockets of consumers.
The Guyana government has been critical of the opposition parties in Parliament, after they used their one seat majority to block passage of legislation to finance the project.
