EU use of per capita income in determining eligibility for aid is misguided-LaRocque

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – SECRETARY General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Caribbean Forum of African Caribbean and  Pacific (ACP) States (CARIFORUM) Mr. Irwin LaRocque  feels that  new European Union (EU) external aid policies of using  per capita income to determine ACP countries  eligibility for  development assistance  is misguided.

Kenya votes to quit global court, days before deputy president’s trial

AMSTERDAM/NAIROBI, (Reuters) – Kenya’s parliament voted yesterday to quit the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, but the Hague-based tribunal said it would press ahead anyway with the trials of the country’s president and his deputy.

GUYANA-POLITICS-High level security sector delegation to meet in Suriname

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana and Suriname will begin high level security talks on Friday.
The two-day meeting is being is being held under the Presidential Engagement Initiative, the brainchild of former Guyana president Bharrat Jagdeo and Surinamese Head of State, Desi Bouterse. The last meeting of this nature was held in 2011.

GUYANA-EDUCATION- Students to be relocated following fire at school

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Students from the L’Aventure Secondary School in West Bank Demerara are being relocated following a fire on Wednesday morning.
At least 700 students have been displaced as a result of the blaze that destroyed the
Administrative and Home Economics as well as the auditorium.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Chronicle - CHARGE d'Affaires of the United States (U.S.) Embassy in Georgetown, Mr. Bryan Hunt has said Guyana has one of the better security regimes of the countries within CARICOM. He offered the opinion to reporters last Friday following a certification of several persons from the sector who underwent training. Hunt said the U.S. is very pleased with the level of implementation by Guyana of advice after personnel are trained.

GUYANA-FINANCE-Guyana says it can be blacklisted for failure to implement CFATF recommendations

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government says the country faces the possibility of being declared a “non-compliant jurisdiction” after it was forced to submit a report to the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) without legislative support from the opposition.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall said that the report, submitted on August 26, will be considered at the CFATF meeting in November.

Prof Girvan to continue as UN good officer in Venezuela/Guyana border dispute

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ended a one-day visit to Guyana on Saturday in a move that strengthens the relationship between the two countries that have had a long standing border dispute.
The two countries have agreed to ask the Jamaica-born academic, Professor Norman Girvan to continue as the United Nations (UN) good officer as they seek to settle their border dispute.
