one, from all indications seems to be a fruitful and productive one as several important agreements were clinched and it is evident that relations between the two South American neighbours will become closer and stronger, much to the benefit of their peoples.

CARIFESTA XI was nothing short of spectacular

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Chronicle - THE Caribbean Festival of the Arts (CARIFESTA) is perhaps the greatest platform for showcasing the cultural diversity of the various Caribbean countries. It presents an excellent opportunity for networking and developing long-lasting relationships between the citizens of those countries.
The recently-concluded 11th edition of this festival is a complete manifestation of just that, as it was our neighbour’s, Suriname’s, turn to organize and host this auspicious event, which was nothing short of spectacular this year.

GUYANA-POLITICS-China providing funds for projects in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – China are providing eight million US dollars for the implementation of a number of projects in Guyana. The two countries Thursday signed an economic and technical cooperation agreement with Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh praising Beijing’s efforts in the socio-economic development of his country. Singh made specific reference to the long-standing historical friendship between the two countries, recalling that Guyana was the first Caribbean country to establish formal diplomatic relations with China following its independence.

GUYANA-POLITICS-Guyana looking to deepen relations between South America and Caribbean

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC –President Donald Ramotar says he is optimistic about the possible integration of South America and the Caribbean as Guyana prepares to welcome Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday. Maduro will pay a one-day official visit to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country and Ramotar said that closer cooperation between South America and the region will result in significant benefits for all parties. "The tempo (of integration) has increased, particularly, since the presence of president (Hugo) Chavez, who had placed more attention to this issue.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Chronicle - The world seems to be on the brink of yet another war as the U.S. and its allies seem set to launch an attack on Syria. According to a Reuters report, the United Nations Security Council was set for a showdown over Syria on Wednesday after Britain sought authorisation for Western military action that seems certain to be vetoed by Russia and probably China. U.N. chemical weapons experts investigating an apparent gas attack that killed hundreds of civilians in rebel-held suburbs of Damascus, made a second trip across the front line to take samples.

Guyana/Venezuela relations based on friendship and cooperation- Foreign Minister

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Chronicle - THE relationship between Guyana and Venezuela continues to grow from strength to strength and the upcoming state visit of that nation’s president is an indication of this, Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett said yesterday, as preparations continue for a one-day state visit by his Excellency, Nicolas Maduro.

The current Venezuelan Head of State has had a close relationship with Minister Rodrigues-Birkettover the years,having served as that country’s foreign minister under the previous President Hugo Chavez.

Region 2 again tops country in CSEC results… - Zimeena Rasheed creates history with 20 subjects

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Chronicle - FOR the second consecutive year, a student from the Essequibo Coast in Region
2(Pomeroon/Supenaam) has topped the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examinations, this time with a regional record of twenty subjects.
Sixteen-year-old Zimeena Rasheed of Anna Regina Secondary School obtained 18 grade ones and 2 grade twos, making the Essequibo region – as well as all Guyana, proud once again and creating history as the writer of the largest number of subjects written by any candidate at this Caribbean exam, ever.

CAYMAN ISLANDS-ELECTIONS-Court rules in favour of Education Minister

GEORGETOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC - Chief Justice Anthony Smellie has ruled that Education and Employment Minister Tara Rivers can keep her West Bay seat in the Parliament after the husband of an election rival had filed a petition challenging her nomination. “The Hon. Chief Justice’s ruling reaffirms that I was duly and rightfully elected and now we can all move forward as a country. It’s time to talk about meaningful employment and liveable wages, an education system that works and gender equality for all our people.

CARIBBEAN-TRADE-New EPA Unit director to review work of agency

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The newly appointed director of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) Implementation Unit at the Guyana-based Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Carlos Wharton, says he intends reviewing the work of the unit as a priority.

“The stocktaking exercise will provide a chance for a retrospective as well as a prospective look at the Unit’s work, in particular, and EPA implementation, in general,” said Wharton, who took up office at the start of the month.
