Agriculture in the Caribbean

GEORGETOWN,  Guyana - After a 10-year hiatus, the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA), which was launched back in 1999, will be hosted by Guyana October 4-12. The steering committee for the event is drawn from the Agriculture Ministry, the Caribbean Community (Caricom), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
The theme chosen for this edition of the CWA is, “Linking the Caribbean for Regional Food and Nutrition Security and Rural Development”.

Guyana welcomes Fly Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica - GUYANA'S Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and other Government officials Thursday night hailed the opening up of a direct route from Jamaica to Guyana by Fly Jamaica airline.
According to Hinds, the route represents an expected growth in tourism and commerce in the South American country.
Hinds commended Fly Jamaica CEO Captain Ronald Reece for being "bold and courageous" to open up the route.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - JAMAICANS may perhaps be too focused with ongoing internal political problems afflicting both the governing Peoples National Party (PNP) and the opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) to reflect on the significant strides being achieved in moving their country out of the long period of depressing social and economic woes.
If an apt comparison could be made to illustrate the changes being pursued for Jamaica’s new path to economic progress and social stability, then Barbados, in the Eastern Caribbean, would easily come to mind.

Reciprocity

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Last week, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff became the first head of state ever to postpone a state visit to the United States of America. Given that state visits are the highest form of diplomatic contact between two nations and Washington usually reserves them for its closest strategic partners, Ms Rousseff’s decision could only be interpreted as a major snub.

Guyana looking to Asia to boost gold sales

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana is seeking to export gold to markets in India and China as the country recorded an estimated 353,000 ounces of the commodity so far this year.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Robert Persaud said that the gold produced so far this year, compares favourably with the 313,000 ounces produced for the same period last year.

Guyana warns of failure in achieving Millennium Development Goals

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – Guyana on Thursday joined Antigua and Barbuda and Trinidad and Tobago in warning that several countries, including some in the Caribbean, are likely to fail in achieving the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
In addressing the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly Debate, President Donald R. Ramotar said while a review has revealed that the world as a whole has witnessed substantial progress towards the achievement of the MDGs, “prospects vary significantly within and across countries.

Guyanese attorney declines post of DPP citing internet attack on integrity

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Guyanese-born attorney Kurt De Freitas, who was due to take up the post of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) here next month, is no longer accepting the post, Attorney General Levi Peter announced Wednesday.
Peter told a news conference that he had received a letter from De Freitas citing unsubstantiated statements about him on the internet as a reason for declining the job.
In his letter, De Freitas said that his decision to withdraw was not one he took lightly.

Orange day

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - On Wednesday, July 25, 2012, UNiTE, the UN Secretary General’s campaign to end violence against women proclaimed that the twenty-fifth day of every month would be dubbed Orange Day and it would be used to bring attention to preventing and ending what has been dubbed ‘the Global scourge’ ‒ violence against women and girls. The UNiTE campaign felt that once a year was not sufficient to highlight this growing problem and its Global Youth Network initiates activities such as encouraging the wearing of the colour orange.

Westgate Mall

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - It is the attack by al-Shabab militants on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, which has been dominating the foreign news reports since Saturday. At the time of writing, President Uhuru Kenyatta had just announced that the siege was over and the security forces were ‘mopping-up.’ The full body count is still not known, because three floors of the mall had collapsed, and there may be dead among the debris.  The Kenyan army and police killed five of the militants and captured 11 alive.

Guyana condemns attack terrorist attack in Kenya

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana has condemned the terrorist attack on Narobi's Westgate Shopping Mall over the last weekend that left more than 60 people dead including a Trinidad and Tobago national.
“The Government of Guyana unequivocally condemns this atrocious terrorist act and will continue to support the initiatives of the international community to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, “President Donald Ramotar said in a message to President Uhuru Kenyatta .
Ramotar said he also regretted the “loss of innocent lives as a result of the siege.
