Venezuela Intercepts Ship With 5 Americans Aboard

CARACAS, Venezuela — Maps of Venezuela hanging on the walls of schoolrooms and in government offices show a large striped area to the east of the country’s border with Guyana marked “Zone in Reclamation.” For more than a century, Venezuela has claimed that it is the rightful owner of this zone, which consists of about three-quarters of Guyana’s national territory. The longstanding feud has often darkened relations between the two nations.

‘Jagdeo Initiative’ remains in place – Agriculture Ministers

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has not abandoned the Jagdeo Initiative on Agriculture, but has been disappointingly slow in its implementation, said regional Ministers of Agriculture on Friday.
In 2003, the Jagdeo initiative, named for former President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, identified and defined the key constraints facing agricultural development in the Caribbean .

Dominica’s Agriculture Minister calls for modernization of the sector

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Dominica’s Minister of Agriculture, Matthew Walter has urged regional Governments to modernise agriculture within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
“We need to modernize agriculture. We need to do agriculture as a business and we need to understand that agriculture is a science,” he told a press briefing as Caribbean Week of Agriculture ended on Friday.
“And we need to send that message to our respective governments that agriculture must be put on the front burner,” he said after a meeting of the Council on Trade and Economic Development (COTED).

`Believe in agriculture’ – rallying call at CWA 2013 opening

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) 2013 was formally opened on Wednesday evening with rallying calls for belief in the agricultural potential of the Region, and action, at all levels, to realize that potential.
At the Guyana International Conference Centre at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, where activities of the twelfth edition of CWA are anchored, speakers at the opening ceremony were confident about the movement towards food security and the alleviation of poverty.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Even as a high-level dialogue among states and governments on the issue of international migration began at the United Nations Headquarters in New York last Thursday, October 3, the media were reporting that more than 100 African migrants had perished (now believed to be more than 300) when their boat capsized and sank in the Mediterranean off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.

EU, Caribbean in accord to upgrade food export standards

(GEORGETOWN) - The European Union agreed Wednesday to spend US$15.7 million on improving systems to ensure that Caribbean food exports meet international standards, officials said.
The EU Ambassador to Guyana, Robert Kopecky, and the Director General of the Inter American Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture, Victor Villalobos, signed the agreement on the margins of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture, being held in Guyana.

Agriculture back in spotlight

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - President Donald Ramotar said that agriculture is finally getting the recognition it deserves in the Caribbean. The president made this remark while addressing the official opening of the 12th Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) being hosted here after 10 years.
Ramotar said there are many challenges that confront the Caribbean and the world at large, but one of the most important challenges is the quest for food.
