Senior CTA official says developing countries should duplicate CWA

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – A senior official of the Netherlands-based Technical Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CTA) says developing countries could benefit from duplicating the format used by the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) to discuss the development of the sector.
“I think this is the only region where there is a specific week every year dedicated to bring the key stakeholders dealing with agriculture together. So we want to encourage other regions to do the same”, CTA director Michael Hailu told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC).

Minister urges youth to reject ‘agropreneurs’ label

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, – Guyana’s Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, Tuesday urged young people involved in agricultural business to reject the “agropreneurs” label, a term used to refer to persons involved in agricultural enterprises.  “I absolutely reject the notion that agriculture is for subsistence livelihood. Anybody who wants to push that, I say absolutely not!” he told the Caribbean Farmers Network (CaFAN) youth consultation, adding that agriculture must be for entrepreneurship.

Regional agriculture ministers to meet in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, – Agriculture ministers from four Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries are to meet here later this week to discuss ways of procuring agricultural inputs at a reduced cost, Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has announced.
He said the meeting over the next few days would include his counterparts from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts-Nevis and Dominica as the region moves to reduce costs in developing the agricultural sector.

Stakeholders make ‘concrete and constructive suggestions’ for regional coconut industry

They met here over the past two days at a workshop titled “Coconut Industry Development for the Caribbean: Towards a Shared Vision” as part of the weeklong activities marking Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA), which continues here until Saturday.

Guyana Minister lauds role of women in ensuring food security in the region

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Guyana’s Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Jennifer Webster, says women’s empowerment must be seen as a catalyst for growth and diversity of CARICOM economies.
She told delegates attending the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) that women’s empowerment is a catalyst for developing any society, and more so in the Caribbean.
“This is probably a great understatement, when we look at the contributions made by our women to development, especially as it relates to food and nutrition security.”

Guyana receives shipment of fertiliser from Venezuela

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government said Monday it had received the first shipment of 5,000 tonnes of fertiliser from Venezuela under a revised agreement between the two countries.
Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said the agreement would significantly boost the agricultural sector, as it will address the cost of production for agricultural products.
Farmers have over the years been faced with the challenge of high prices for fertiliser, a constraint which affected not only their trade but the high price for agricultural commodities.

Making Caribbean Agriculture Climate Smart’ book launched in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC -- Two leading agricultural organisations have launched a book on agriculture in a climate-change Caribbean environment, as a leading agriculturalist warned that global climate change is one of the most serious threats to sustainable development in the region.
The publication, “Making Caribbean Agriculture Climate Smart”, was launched during the Joint Technical Opening of Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) on Sunday.

Developed countries criticised over failure to transfer technology

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Guyana’s Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has criticised the world’s rich countries over their failure to transfer to developing nations the technology needed to fast track their development.
Ramsammy said their failure has led to developing countries being unable to meet Millennium Development Goal (MDG) number 8.
