Dominica condemns use of chemical weapons in Syria

UNITED NATIONS, CMC - Dominica Monday called for an end to the conflict in Syria and condemned the attack on the mall by militants in Nigeria that killed almost 100 people.
“We must continue to fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” the island’s UN ambassador to the United Nations Vince Henderson said as he also condemned “unreservedly the use of chemical weapons which is a gross violation of international law”.

Former prime minister dismisses reports of a return to active politics

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Former prime minister Oliver Serpahin has rubbished reports that he is making a comeback into local politics.
“I have been resident abroad for the most part of the past six years and wish to state categorically that I have  at no time expressed a desire or demonstrated intent to form any other political organization for the forthcoming general elections in Dominica,” said Seraphin, who served as head of an interim government here between 1979-80.

Guyanese attorney declines post of DPP citing internet attack on integrity

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Guyanese-born attorney Kurt De Freitas, who was due to take up the post of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) here next month, is no longer accepting the post, Attorney General Levi Peter announced Wednesday.
Peter told a news conference that he had received a letter from De Freitas citing unsubstantiated statements about him on the internet as a reason for declining the job.
In his letter, De Freitas said that his decision to withdraw was not one he took lightly.

National Security Minister resigns

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – National Security Minister Charles Savarin has resigned paving the way for his nomination as a government candidate for the post of President of Dominica.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, speaking on the state-owned DBS radio on Thursday morning, said that Savarin’s name would be forwarded to the parliament ahead of the election of a new head of state on September 30.
He said the earlier nominee, Jennifer Wallace La Fond, had withdrawn her nomination for “personal reasons”.

Dominica hosts major conference on geothermal energy development

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says a two-day geothermal conference will provide Dominica with an opportunity to secure funding for its geothermal energy development.
“It will be an opportunity to share with potential partners and current partners about the prospects we have and what will be needed to see the implementation of the geothermal project. It is important that we share this information with our partners,” Skerrit said of the two-day conference that begins on Thursday.

Government outlines priorities for CARICOM

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica government Tuesday provided a shopping list that Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries should examine as efforts continue to deepen the regional integration movement.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, speaking to reporters after his Cabinet met with a delegation from the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat, said the list included the need for hassle free travel, air and maritime transportation, renewable energy and food production among others.

DOMINICA-POLITICS-Government nominates Speaker for post of President

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has confirmed that the Speaker of the Dominica parliament, Alix Boyd-Knights, has been nominated to replace President Eluid Williams when his term expires in October.
Williams was elected to the post in September last year with the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) legislators boycotting the event. The UWP later took the matter to court.
Williams was elected to complete the term of then President Nicholas Liverpool who resigned because of ill-health.

DOMINICA-POLITICS-Opposition party elects new leader, gears for general election

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) gearing for a general election that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has hinted could come before the constitutional deadline, has elected talk show host Lennox Linton as its new leader.
Former Prime Minister Edison James said that the party had already selected a significant number of its candidates for the elections. In the December 18, 2009 general elections  Skerrit’s Dominica Labour Party (DLP) won by an 18 of the 21 seats.

CARIBBEAN-FASHION-Regional fashion designers urged to apply for funding to participate in Dominicana

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados-based Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) is urging regional fashion designers to participate in the Dominicana Moda to be held in the Dominica Republic in October. Caribbean Export said under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), it would be collaborating with the organisers of the October 21-16 Dominicana Moda 2013 (DM2013) in supporting fashion designers to show off their collection during the Dominican Republic official Fashion Week.

DOMINICA-ENERGY-Government denies being unable to meet payment under PetroCaribe

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica government Wednesday described as “mischievous and ill informed” reports that the island cannot make payments to Venezuela for petroleum products received under the existing PetroCaribe initiative. Acting Prime Minister Reginald Austrie, speaking on the state-owned DBS radio, said the arrangement with Caracas “is alive, it’s transparent and we continue to enjoy the very excellent relationship with the government of Venezuela”.
