Dominican Republic industries want to take Haiti to court

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s business leaders propose charging Haiti at the World Trade Organization and other international bodies for imposing non-tariff barriers to local exports, in the heels of Port-au-Prince’s months-long ban on the imports of eggs, chickens, and plastic products as of last week. Haiti’s Private Sector Economic Forum approved the restrictions against Dominican products Last week, and also asked their government to bolster controls at the border.

Attorney general warns about illegal drugs trade

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Attorney General Levi Peter is urging Dominicans to stay away from the illegal drugs trade after a number of people appeared in court on Thursday following police seizure of drugs estimated at more than a million dollars (One EC dollar = US0.37 cents).
“Human nature being what it is, greed is blinding many of us to the dangers of this drug menace. People are prepared to close their eyes, collude and get themselves involved with people who they know are involved in this activity because of material gain.

China provides 18 million for projects in Dominica

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – China is providing more than EC$18 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) to Dominica for a number of community-based projects and the construction of a new hospital in the capital.
“This assistance is being granted to us by China at a very difficult time for all of us in the world including China, but because of the extra ordinary friendship between the two countries. China continues to be a very dear and sincere friend to the Government and people of Dominica and we are indeed very grateful for this” Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said.

CDF to provide funds to Dominica; signs headquarters agreement with Barbados

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados-based CARICOM Development Fund (CDF) will soon sign a US$7.1 million agreement with Dominica.
CDF executive officer Ambassador Lorne McDonnough said that the organisation will continue to assist disadvantaged countries, regions and sectors within the Caribbean Community as they participate in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
The CDF has since 2011 provided US$35.5 million in financial assistance to Belize, Dominica, St .Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Southern village hardest hit by storm’s passage

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC -- Tropical Storm Chantal left Dominica with a trail of destruction in the southern part of this Windward island on Tuesday before churning out into the Caribbean Sea and setting its sights on Haiti and the Dominican Republic. By 5.00 pm (2100 GMT), a tropical storm warning was discontinued after a day of strong gusts left some homes without roofs, forcing occupants to seek shelter from relatives.

Dominica mopping up after passage of Tropical Storm Chantal

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Electricity was slowing being restored to several parts of Dominica on Wednesday as authorities began the task of counting the cost of the damage caused by Tropical Storm Chantal 24 hours earlier. Public Works and Infrastructural Development Minister Rayburn Blackmore, speaking on the state-owned DBS radio Wednesday, said the authorities will be assessing the damage “and at the end of the day we should have a better report”.

Dominica’s national debt in excess of EC$700 million

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Dominica’s national debt is in excess of EC$700 million (One Ec dollar = US$0.37 cents), the island’s director of audit, Clarence Christian has said.
Speaking on the state-owned DBS radio, Christian said the total central government debt was EC$702.8 million with external debt accounting for EC$520.9 million.
He said the value of unpaid cheques, which people have not collected, is in excess of three million dollars.

PM denies lack of consultation ahead of budget

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has dismissed suggestions that his administration has not engaged in public consultations ahead of the presentation of the 2013-14 national budget.
General Secretary of the Dominica Public service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang, spoke of the lack of consultation with the union but Skerrit, speaking on the state-owned DBS radio, said that consultations are ongoing with stakeholders.
