Gender equality policies to be discussed in the Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, CMC – Gender inequalities in the digital economy will be examined here this week at the 12th Session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The October 15-18 intergovernmental meeting, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Government of the Dominican Republic, will be opened at the Hotel Hilton Santo Domingo.

Dominica’s Agriculture Minister calls for modernization of the sector

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Dominica’s Minister of Agriculture, Matthew Walter has urged regional Governments to modernise agriculture within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
“We need to modernize agriculture. We need to do agriculture as a business and we need to understand that agriculture is a science,” he told a press briefing as Caribbean Week of Agriculture ended on Friday.
“And we need to send that message to our respective governments that agriculture must be put on the front burner,” he said after a meeting of the Council on Trade and Economic Development (COTED).

As fallout spreads, Dominican Republic starts tally of Haitians’ offspring

Santo Domingo.- The government of the Dominican Republic on Wednesday issued a temporary residency permit to Juliana Dequis Pierre, whose parents are undocumented Haitians, as the first step within the nationwide plan to regularize foreigners living in the country illegally.
The measure stems from the ruling which has fueled protests in Miami, Port-au-Prince and San Juan, while in Mexico, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights hears testimony from alleged Dominicans who say they were expelled because of their Haitian origin.

Dominican Republic: President to Find ‘Solution’ for Haitian Migrants

President of the Dominican Republic Danilo Medina met yesterday with activist groups fighting against a court ruling, that strips citizenship from thousands of people born to undocumented migrant workers since 1929.
The ruling from the Dominican Constitutional Court could lead to mass deportations of Haitians living in the Dominician Republic and has been criticised by the United Nations as it may leave people stateless and without access to identity documents.

Dominica re-emphasises importance of developing geothermal energy sector

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica government Monday re-emphasised the importance of developing the island’s geothermal energy sector as the Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) granted the island’s lone electricity supplier with two new 25 year licences.
Public Works, Energy and Ports Minister Rayburn Blackmoore said Dominica, like many other Caribbean countries, do not have natural gas or proven oil.

Savarin sworn in as new head of state

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Charles Angelo Savarin was sworn in as Dominica’s eighth head of state since the island attained political independence 35 years ago, promising to serve the country without malice or ill will to any member of the population.
For the former minister, teacher and diplomat, the occasion was perhaps the best gift he could have received on his 70th birthday on Wednesday.

UN urges Dominican Republic to ensure citizens of Haitian origin do not lose nationality

GENEVA, Switzerland, CMC - The United Nations human rights office has urged the Dominican Republic to take all necessary measures to ensure that citizens of Haitian origin are not deprived of their right to nationality in light of a recent court ruling.
Last week the country’s Constitutional Court ruled that the children of undocumented migrants who have been in the Dominican Republic and registered as Dominicans as far back as 1929, cannot have Dominican nationality as their parents are considered to be “in transit”.

President-elect Savarin defends his election

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC - President-elect Charles Savarin has defended his election even as Opposition Leader Hector John said he would snub the head of state and boycott all functions officiated by him.
Savarin, 70, who is expected to be sworn in to office later this week, was elected by the Dominica parliament by a 19-0 margin after opposition legislators boycotted the event on Monday.
