ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Britain does not regard Dominica’s move to join the appellate jurisdiction of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as an act of “anti-Privy Council”, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said here on Wednesday.
Skerrit said that his administration would be sending an official letter to London “by the end of this week” outlining his administration’s desire to join the CCJ, which was established in 2001 to replace the Privy Council as the region’s final court.

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says many international financial institutions take a long time to disburse funds to developing countries as he applauded the work of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) bank.

Skerrit, commenting on the decision of St. Lucia to join the Venezuela-led ALBA, the creation of the bank has resulted in funds being made available to member states at a very low concessionary rate.

DOMINICA-HEALTH-Health Ministry confirms dengue outbreak

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Ministry of Health here has issued an alert concerning an outbreak of dengue fever. So far seven cases of the disease have been confirmed while the authorities are awaiting confirmation on eighteen suspected cases. There have been no reported deaths.

DOMINICA-ECONOMY-EU pleased with Dominica, pledges more budgetary assistance

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The European Union says Dominica will continue to receive financial assistance under the European Development Fund (EDF) Budget Support Programme. Head of Delegation of the European Union to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Ambassador Mikael Barford, gave that assurance following a review meeting of the 10th EDF General Budget Support, here on Wednesday.

Dominica’s Head of State wants nationals overseas to invest in the country

Delivering the traditional Throne Speech ahead of the budget presentation by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Williams, a former senior public servant, said that one of the challenges facing the country is the creation of sustainable jobs.

PM Skerrit presents EC$474.5 million tax free budget

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit Wednesday presented an EC$474.7 million (One EC dollar= US$0.37 cents) take free budget to Parliament predicting economic growth and improvements in the main revenue earning sectors.
Skerrit, who is also Finance Minister, said that budget presented does not include any new taxes or unrealistic promises and that it is based on the theme “Building On the Gains We Have Made”.

Dominicans ‘cannot continue to tolerate bans’ from Haiti: Mogul

Santo Domingo.- US$75.0 million in losses is what the Haiti government’s ban on plastics means for Dominican Republic, which “cannot continue to tolerate bans being imposed.”
Dominican Republic Industries Association (AIRD) president Ligia Bonetti on Monday said Haiti takes its measures without rationality and without any support and that the latest ban could lead to losses of more than US$75 million on products destined exclusively for the Haitian market.
