Former prime minister faces challenge for leadership of opposition party

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Former prime minister Stephenson King faces a challenge from his former tourism minister for leadership of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) when it holds its annual convention in July. Both men were nominated to contest the post of party leader as the UWP, which was defeated in the last general election, gears for the July 28 convention. The UWP has for the past few weeks convened a series of constituency conferences, culminating with the conference of delegates over the weekend at which nominations for positions on the party executive were announced.

ST. LUCIA-COURT-Court rules St. Lucia needs no referendum before joining CCJ

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled that the St. Lucia does not require a referendum before becoming a full member of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council as the region’s final court. A number of eminent jurists and the St. Lucia government had sought the advice of the Court to determine whether there was an error in the Constitution that would allow for certain amendments to proceed with before joining the CCJ.
