Opposition party concerned about LIAT’s service

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - The main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has expressed concern about the service provided by the regional carrier LIAT. UWP Leader Allen Chastanet says the operations of LIAT are critical to the tourism industry and the overall business market of St Lucia, notwithstanding, the dependency on LIAT for the delivery of professional and efficient service.

St Lucian opera singer dies

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - St.Lucian Cultural Icon and International Opera singer Blaise Pascal, 38, died in New York on Wednesday after a ten week illness, family sources have confirmed.
News of his illness was announced by the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) last month. Pascal, a well known international tenor, left St.Lucia for New York in July to perform the lead role in a theatrical production at the Lincoln Center in New York when he came down with a bout of pneumonia.

Opposition party wants ban on gambling

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The small opposition Lucian Peoples Movement (LPM) is calling on the government to ban gaming facilities and slot machines which it claims are having a destabilising effect on the lives of St. Lucians.
The LPM has accused both the ruling St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) and the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) of hypocrisy in dealing with the situation.

Business group wants reduction in VAT in order to spur economic activity

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia Employers Federation (SLEF) is calling on the government to lower the near one-year old Value Added Tax (VAT) so as to provide “some breathing space” to local business in the face of job losses and business closures.
"This reduction will provide members some breathing space as the slowdown in the economy continues to bite deep into their cash flows," said SLEF executive director Joseph Alexander.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government says the decision by the United States to prevent members of the local police service from participating in training programmes financed by Washington has nothing to do with the island’s decision to join the Venezuela-led Bolivarian Alliance of our People’s (ALBA).
Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony, addressing supporters of the ruling St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) following his visit to the United States last week, dismissed the position taken by the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) on the matter.

ST. LUCIA-POLITICS-Opposition calls on St. Lucia government to state position on Syria

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) Tuesday called on the St. Lucia government to publicly indicate its position on the Syrian conflict saying that the island’s position should not be guided by recent statements by members of the Bolivarian Alliance of our People’s (ALBA).
The UWP said that the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad has been engaged in atrocities against its own people and it would be interesting to note the position of the Kenny Anthony administration given St. Lucia’s recent membership of ALBA.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Leader of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP), Allen Chastanet, Monday said he was looking forward to holding talks with Lennox Linton, who was elected un-opposed as leader of the UWP in Dominica. “We look forward to holding talks soon on regional issues of mutual interest,” said Chastanet, who himself was elected to the top post of the party here last month. “We welcome Mr. Linton’s ascension to the helm of the United Workers Party of Dominica,” he added.

CARIBBEAN-ENVIRONMENT-Caribbean environment experts to meet in St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - Climate change experts from across the Caribbean begin a three-day meeting here on Tuesday to discuss ways of reducing the impact of climate change on the region’s agriculture and tourism sectors. The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Secretariat will host its third climate change seminar from September 3 that will also focus on “strategies and innovations in tourism and agriculture”.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The small opposition Lucian People’s Movement (LPM) Wednesday said that it supports the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) in principle but, cautions the St. Lucia government about a long-term dependence on the organization. “While the government of St Lucia should have engaged in greater consultation with the people of St Lucia before joining ALBA, the LPM is behind it in principle”, said LPM leader, Therold Prudent. Prudent stressed the need for a broader approach to international diplomacy, stating, “the world is a much different place today.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government Tuesday described as “false” some of the questions being raised by newly elected leader of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP), Allen Chastanet regarding St. Lucia’s membership of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA). The government said it is untrue to suggest St. Lucia was joining ALBA by stealth, noting that the Prime Minister held several interviews on PetroCaribe and ALBA and announced through the Throne Speech that the island would join ALBA.
