Regional credit rating agency downgrades St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC-Persistent and severe deterioration in government’s fiscal position and a resultant steady increase in debt stock are among reasons which the Caribbean Information and Credit Rating Services Limited (CariCRIS) has cited for its decision to downgrade St Lucia’s credit ratings.
CariCRIS is a regional credit rating agency, with a market-driven initiative aimed at fostering and supporting the development of regional debt markets.

Veteran lawyer against joining CCJ

CASTRIES, St. Lucia CMC – A member of the St. Lucia delegation that attended the constitutional talks leading to the island’s political independence from Britain more than three decades ago, says he is “dead against” breaking ties with the London-based Privy Council.
Attorney Evans Calderon, one of two surviving delegates to the talks more than 34 years ago, told a local newspaper that he also believes that in order to join the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), the island would have to stage a referendum.

OECS observers 32nd anniversary on Tuesday

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) observes its 32nd anniversary on Tuesday with officials pointing to a number of achievements including the establishment of the Economic Union over the past three decades.
OECS Chairman and Prime Minister of Antigua, Baldwin Spencer, will deliver an address to mark the occasion.

St. Lucia PM says Cuba cutting back on assistance to region

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government says several policy changes taking place in Cuba will severely affect Havana’s contribution to the health sector of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries. Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony, who recently ended a week long official visit to Cuba where he held talks with President Raul Castro and other senior government officials, said the changes have been brought about as a result of the worsening global economic climate. He said the changes will bring to an end to Cuba's traditional support for the regional health sector.

Taiwan provides funds to St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – St. Lucia has received a grant of EC$7.5 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) from Taiwan to assist with development projects on the island. Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Kenny Anthony said the funds represented the balance from the first set of constituency development projects (CDP) submitted for funding and will create a significant number of jobs. Taiwan is providing just over EC$24 million this financial year towards the CDP and Anthony said it was important for both countries that the "monies under this programme are well spent."

World Bank lauds St. Lucia as “success story”

WASHINGTON, CMC - The World Bank has lauded St. Lucia as a “success story” within the Caribbean for its efforts in managing the risk of rainfall-triggered landslides. The Washington-based financial institution said it has helped the St. Lucia government with “crucial information” about the causes of landslides, as well as an insight into the most at-risk areas. Addressing the effects and causes of landslides, the bank said the Management of Slope Stability in Communities, or MoSSaiC, project reduced the risk with a three-pronged approach.

Law expert gives opinion on holding referendum to join CCJ

Dominica to host OECS public awareness programme on Economic Union

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Dominica will be the first country within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to participate in a national public awareness programme on the OECS Economic Union. OECS Director of Economic Affairs Randy Cato said the public awareness programme is aimed at providing information on the Economic Union to the general public.

Police Commissioner warns drug traffickers

CASTRIES, St.Lucia, CMC - The annual exercises between law enforcement in the Caribbean and US military ended here on the week end with a stern warning to drug traffickers from St.Lucia's Police Commissioner, Vernon Francois. "St.Lucia is no safe haven for your drug activities," Francois said while addressing the closing ceremony of the week long "Tradewinds" exercise.
