CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – A new publication based on the work of St. Lucia’s second Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott, has been released here and acclaimed as an essential addition to the understanding and appreciation of his work. The book titled “Interlocking Basins of a Globe – Essays on Derek Walcott” feature essays that range from discussion of Walcott’s earliest poetry in Twenty-Five Poems (1948) to his most recent collections that explore encroaching old age, The Prodigal (2004) and White Egrets (2010).

ST. LUCIA-BUSINESS-Manufacturers give shopping list to St. Lucia government

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – President of the St. Lucia Manufacturers Association (SLMA), Paula Calderon, is calling on the government to give more attention to the manufacturing sector which has been making a consistent contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In a television interview, Calderon expressed the opinion that greater attention is being paid to tourism, the mainstay of the economy, which she says “has received everything they’ve ask for”.

ST. LUCIA-COURT-Contractors seeking payment of millions of dollars warded by High Court

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Contractors who won a three million EC dollar (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) judgement against the “Mayor and Citizens” of Castries are calling on the St. Lucia government to honour the High Court ruling. Attorney Lydia Fasial said the judgment was granted after the Castries City Council failed to put in a defence within the 28 days as required under the procedures of the High Court. "So on the 28th day I got my default judgement," she told reporters.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government Monday denied regional media reports that Police Commissioner Vernon Francois had been sent on leave in the wake of a decision by the United States to bar him from attending a conference in that country. “The attention of the government of St. Lucia has been drawn to a story on the online news site, Caribbean News Now allegedly written by a ‘Caribbean News Now Contributor’.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia CMC-Two years after Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), declared that people of the regional grouping can move freely, Chairman of the OECS Authority Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Baldwin Spencer says the free movement of nationals will continue to hold a pride of place in efforts to further develop one economic space among the OECS Member States.

ST. LUCIA-POLITICS-Chile wants enhanced relationship with OECS

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - Chile’s Ambassador to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Eduardo Bonilla has affirmed his country’s support for an enhanced relationship with the regional grouping. Bonilla, the first Ambassador of Chile to the OECS, expressed confidence in the ability of both sides to realize a last a fruitful cooperation agenda which could include areas such as agriculture, health, disaster management, international negotiations and Spanish language scholarships.

ST. LUCIA-DEATH-Cricket fan electrocuted

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – A former police officer was electrocuted at the Beausejour Cricket Ground (BCC) as cricket fans watched the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match between the St Lucia Zouks and the Antigua Hawksbills Tuesday night.
Julian Agard, a former member of the St. Lucia youth Council, was pronounced dead at the medical centre, and the St. Lucia News Online website reported that not many people had noticed that he had been electrocuted near one of the stands.

ST.LUCIA-POLITICS-PM defends membership of ALBA

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony has rejected claims from sections of the business community here that St. Lucia’s membership in the Venezuela led Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) would harm the island’s future socio-economic development.
St. Lucia last week announced that it had gained membership of ALBA and according to an official statement, “ALBA represents a significant avenue for St. Lucia to access very low-cost financing for critical national initiatives”.

King toppled as leader of main opposition party

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - Former prime minister Stephenson King was swept out of the leadership of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) after his former tourism minister Allen Chastanet scored a convincing victory in Sunday’s poll.
King, who led the UWP into defeat in the 2011 general elections, was defeated by a 264-99 margin with Chastanet’s “A” Team also securing a clean sweep of all the executive posts at stake.

Prime Minister attending ALBA Summit in Ecuador

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony leaves here for Ecuador to attend the XII Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP).
The meeting on Tuesday brings together heads of state or governments, with St. Lucia hoping to formalise its entry into the ALBA group in keeping with the announcement made by Governor General Dame Perlette Louisy earlier this year.
