Prime Minister accuses some businesses of using VAT as a scapegoat for their problems

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government says nine months after introducing the Value Added Tax (VAT), sections of the business community were still using the measure as a scapegoat for their problems and issues.
The VAT was introduced here on October 1, last year amid objections from opposition elements and sections of the small business community that the timing was bad and the measure would be a further burden on the population.

Prime Minister urges hoteliers to look at the “big picture”

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC- Prime Minister Kenny Anthony has called on hoteliers to redefine their approach to the industry and do more to improve quality and mutually beneficial partnerships. Addressing the 49th annual general meeting of the St.Lucia Hotels and Tourism Association, the Prime Minister said developed countries such as the United States and Europe, which are major source markets for the industry, are currently jostling for number one status as visitor magnets.

Government to implement projects under Taiwan assisted CDP

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government Wednesday said it is moving swiftly to implementing community projects under the Constituency Development Programme (CDP) with financial assistance from the Taiwanese government. The Kenny Anthony government said as a result of the grants provided by Taiwan, it has allocated EC$24 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) to the CDP this financial year. A government statement said that since the start of the financial year, 120 contracts, valued at five million dollars, had been awarded under the CDP.

St Lucia to close airport as Tropical Storm approaches

Castries, St Lucia, CMC – The Government of St. Lucia will be closing the George F. Charles Airport as of midnight on Monday due the impending passage of Tropical Storm Chantal. As a result the regional carrier, LIAT has been forced to cancel several flights in and out of the island on Tuesday. According to release from LIAT, an assessment will be made by the St. Lucian authorities at 11:00 am on Tuesday determine the time for reopening the airport.

Schools ordered closed as St Lucia prepares for Tropical Storm Chantal

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC- The Government has ordered the closure of all schools by noon and throughout Tuesday as the country prepares for the passage of Tropical Storm Chantal. According to a government statement, the schools will remain closed until Wednesday morning, unless advised otherwise. Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, is expected to chair a pre- strike meeting of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) on Monday and preparations have begun to ensure that all hurricane shelters are available especially for persons living in flood prone areas.

St. Lucia to hold talks with British government on membership to CCJ

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony says his government will hold talks with Britain in keeping with the island’s constitution, as it seeks to join the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council as the region’s final court.

ST. LUCIA-CRIME-St. Lucians convicted in French court

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – A court in the French island of Martinique has convicted four St. Lucian nationals who were on a wanted list for a series of criminal activities including the alleged murder of a French doctor.

Fabian Cherubin, Roger Hilaire, Danny Francis and Roger Avril were accused of committing the acts during a 10- day period in August and September 2008.

Francis and Cherubin were Wednesday convicted of aggravated robbery and kidnapping and were sentenced to 11 years in jail, while Hilaire was given a 13-year jail term at the end of the four-day trial.

ST. LUCIA-DEVELOPMENT-CDB providing funds for poverty eradication in St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - St. Lucia has received an EC$15 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) grant from the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to boost efforts at eradicating poverty in the towns and villages across the island.
But Social Services Minister Harold Dalson says the financial institution is insisting upon accountability for the funds being released under the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) established to manage the reduction of poverty and vulnerability through enhanced access to basic and economic infrastructure and human resource services.

Dominica, St Lucia to make CCJ their final appeal court

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian, Secretary General of Caricom, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, has announced that Dominica and St Lucia are expected to join other countries in making the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) their final court of appeal. While others—including T&T—have not signed on to make the CCJ their final court for all matters, Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Dookeran said yesterday if there was one area of concern, it was that Caricom had taken collective decisions that were not implemented on a timely basis.

St Lucia prime minister proposes overhaul of regional education system

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, - Prime Minister Kenny Anthony is proposing major changes to the regional educational system in order to reduce the growing problem of unemployment among young people.
He made the recommendations in an address to over 150 youth attending a regional conference hosted by the Caribbean Youth Empowerment Programme which highlights challenges facing youth at risk in the region, at a three day conference Thursday.
