ST. LUCIA-AGRICULTURE-FAO to assist farmers in St. Lucia and St. Vincent and thte Grenadines

CASTRIES, St.Lucia, CMC- The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), has formally agreed to help St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines as both countries continue to recover from devastation caused by torrential rains in December. During recent missions to St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, the head of the FAO’s operations in the Caribbean, formally signed livelihood rehabilitation and resilience building assistance totalling US$630,000.

CARIBBEAN-POLITICS-St. Lucia’s Opposition Leader wants “neutral” position on Venezuela

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – St. Lucia’s Opposition Leader Dr. Gale Rigobert is calling on Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries to remain “neutral” in the ongoing political disturbances in Venezuela where the opposition have been staging anti-government demonstrations to force the resignation of President Nicolas Maduro.
Rigobert, speaking on the Observer Radio here, said that she does not believe that the regional countries should at this time get involved in “what is happening in Venezuela.

Eight Caribbean countries to strengthen HIV programmes - UNAIDS

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Tuesday February 25, 2014, CMC – UNAIDS Caribbean said Monday that eight regional countries have finalised specific strategies aimed at strengthening their HIV programmes by making them more responsive to human rights.

It said that the representatives from Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago met her last week for a three-day workshop hosted by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and supported by the Ford Foundation.

Government seeking to eliminate books in the classroom

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC - St.Lucia's Prime Minister Kenny Anthony says his government is seeking to revolutionise the islands education system by eliminating the need for books in the classroom.
Anthony, who is also Finance Minister made his intentions known to students in the south of the island Wednesday as they became part of the distribution network of thousands of laptop computers.

Taiwan funding new energy project in St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – St. Lucia says Taiwan is funding a project to reduce energy consumption in the public sector through the installation of energy-efficient lighting in public buildings.
One component of the Sustainable Energy project is the replacement of the costly incandescent lights with light emitting diode (LED) lighting.

Mother of St. Lucia PM dies

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The 93-year-old mother of Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony has died after ailing for a short period.
Press Secretary Jadia Jn Pierre-Emmanuel confirmed that Andrazine Anthony passed away at the Tapion Hospital, on the outskirts of the capital on Tuesday.
The ruling St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) said “Andraz”, as she was affectionately known, had “always been a tower of strength for her children.
