TURN CRISIS INTO OPPORTUNITY - CARICOM MEMBER STATES URGED

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Member States of the Caribbean Community have been challenged to grasp the opportunities that may present themselves as a result of the global financial and economic crisis.

The Honourable Dr. Kenneth Baugh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Jamaica, issued the challenge Friday at a Press Conference prior to the conclusion of the Twenty-Seventh Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED).

Let me begin by being quite relevant, in extending a pleasant climatic and environmentally peaceful day to all of you. It is a real pleasure, and a genuine honour, to welcome you to this Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change and Development. Indeed, I feel particularly honoured to welcome you today in my capacity as CARICOM’s lead Head of Government with responsibility for the Sustainable Development portfolio, which includes Climate Change.

REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY EDWIN W. CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), ON THE OCCASION OF THE OPENING OF THE TWENTY-SEVENTH MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FOR TRADE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (COTED), 14-15 MAY 2009, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

Permit me to say a few words as this Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) gets underway. I first want to welcome you Madame Chair to your first meeting of the Council and to say what better place to start than at the top! I am sure that your colleagues, like myself, look forward to your guidance, as we seek to resolve the many thorny issues on the Agenda before us. Also I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Minister of Trade from Trinidad and Tobago the Honourable Mariano Browne and his counterpart from Haiti the Honourable Marie Josee Garnier.

SMOOTH TRANSITION OF RNM INTO SECRETARIAT SAYS SECRETARY-GENERAL

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Work is moving apace to incorporate the former Regional Negotiating Machinery (RNM) into the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat as a Specialised Department in keeping with a decision taken at the 20th Intersessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in Belize in March 2009.

INTEGRATION AN ‘ABSOLUTE NECESSITY’ - CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) In the face of the current global environment, Caribbean integration was not one of choice, but one of absolute necessity according to His Excellency Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
