(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Diplomats from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) were reminded today that during the course of their careers, successful advocacy and networking would be important as they sought to champion the various causes for their individual countries and the Region.
It gives me great pleasure to address you on the occasion of the opening of this important Regional Diplomatic Training Course for Mid-Career Diplomats in the Caribbean Community.
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The development of Foreign Policy Coordination Strategy by the Member States of the Caribbean Community must be regarded as one of the achievements of which CARICOM can be justly proud.
This approach to Foreign Policy is one of the pillars of the Community as enshrined in the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, and has put the Caribbean in good standing in the international arena. This approach has also seen the Caribbean taking leadership role in the diplomatic Community on issues such as relations with Cuba.
My sincere thanks are extended to the Secretariat and the Secretary General for inviting me to speak at this Opening Ceremony. It is always wonderful to be in Guyana – the country of my birth – and I thank you for affording me an opportunity to visit. The pleasure is even greater as the training programme that begins today represents in so many ways, the raison d’être of the Caribbean Community and the University of the West Indies. It brings together institutions, peoples and skills in the spirit of sharing information and knowledge for the greater good of this region that we serve.
This is for me a most pleasant duty to extend a very warm welcome to all of you, to those participants and presenters who have travelled to Guyana and in particular to those of you for whom this is your first visit to the site of the Headquarters of the Caribbean Community.
