COORDINATED EFFORTS NEEDED TO TACKLE HIGH FOOD IMPORT BILL

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) was formally opened on Wednesday with a chorus of calls for coordinated efforts to firmly tackle the huge food import bill and ensure food security in the Region.

The calls were made at the ceremony at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, St. John’s, Antigua.

​(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) It is indeed a pleasure for me to address the opening of the 11th Caribbean Week of Agriculture, here in the beautiful country of Antigua and Barbuda whose government graciously consented to be the host for this week of activities. Since 1998, the CWA has become the signature event for the Region’s agriculture since it brings together a wide variety of stakeholders from the private sector, government, academia, and civil society, including youth and women, to examine the Caribbean’s most enduring sector.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Monday, 15 October 2012 marks the fourth observance by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) of Caribbean Statistics Day, which is aimed not only at raising the profile of statistics and statisticians across the Region but also at recognising the crucial role of statistics in the advancement of the daily lives of the people of our Community.

CARICOM PROVIDES ENTREPRENEURSHIP TRAINING FOR REGIONAL YOUTH

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Job creation is one of the most challenging tasks facing Caribbean Governments today as the unemployment rate continues to climb steadily, especially among young people who make up roughly 64% of the Region’s population.

JOURNALIST TO BE AWARDED AT CWA OPENING

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Five journalists from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be awarded for excellence in reporting on climate change adaptation and mitigation when the eleventh Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) formally opens on Wednesday afternoon at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda.

The competition for which the awards will be presented, was organized by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation (CTA).

SPECIAL COTED ON AGRICULTURE ON FRIDAY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkey, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) As World Food Day activities were being observed under the theme Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world’, agriculture officials on Tuesday met in Antigua and Barbuda in preparation for the Fortieth Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) on Agriculture which will be held on Friday.

The one-day Ministerial Meeting will be convened at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in St. John’s, Antigua, and is the final activity of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA).
