MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY TO COMMEMORATE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE 25 NOVEMBER TO 10 DECEMBER 2013

The CARICOM Secretariat joins women and men globally to commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed from 25 November which is designated as the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, the UN Human Rights Day.  This annual campaign spans these 16 Days in order to highlight the link between violence against women and human rights.

CARICOM Chair to represent the Community at Memorial Service for Mr. Mandela

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Chair of the CARICOM Conference of Heads of Government, Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago will represent the Community at the Official State Memorial Service to be held on Tuesday 10 December, 2013 in Johannesburg, for Mr. Nelson Mandela, first democratically elected President of South Africa, former Head of the African National Congress and International Icon.

CARICOM High Level Ministerial Meeting on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities in the Caribbean Building a Disability-Inclusive Society For All Declaration of Pétion Ville 6 December 2013

We, the representatives of the Fifteen States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM),

 

 

Having met in Pétion Ville on 5 and 6 December 2013 for the High Level Ministerial Meeting on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities;

 

Recalling the decision of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, meeting in July 2013, that priority attention be given to the concerns of persons with disabilities;

 

Declaration of Port au Prince expected to be signed after CARICOM High-Level Meeting on the Rights of Persons Living with Disabilities and Special Needs

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     A two-day High Level Meeting on the Rights of Persons Living with Disabilities and Special Needs began in Haiti on Thursday. It is expected to conclude with the signing of the Declaration of Port-au-Prince which should outline a strategy for International Cooperation as it relates to persons living with disabilities and special needs in the Caribbean.

CARICOM, UNFPA and Government of Trinidad and Tobago Unite to tackle Adolescent Pregnancy in the Caribbean

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Ambassador John W. Ashe, President of the 68th Session of the General Assembly, and Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund will lead a high level delegation to Trinidad and Tobago for a regional consultation on adolescent pregnancy. The purpose of the consultation is to explore the opportunities and challenges in addressing adolescent pregnancy which has been identified by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as a priority issue.

CARICOM Attorneys-General discuss implications of Myrie Ruling

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)    The Legal Affairs Committee (LAC) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has discussed the implications for the Community and Member States on the recent Caribbean Court of Justice ruling in the matter involving Shanique Myrie.
