GUYANA-POLITICS-President writes opposition legislators on anti-money laundering bill

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – President Donald Ramotar has written to members of the National Assembly urging them to ensure that the amendments to the anti-money laundering legislation is approved ahead of the international deadline.
In his letter, read out by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, the head of state called on all legislators to put aside their differences and put the country first.

Former speaker dies on the eve of general election

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC – Edna Moyle, a founding member of the main opposition People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) died Tuesday, less than 24 hours before voters in this British Overseas Territory go to the polls to elect a new government.
Relatives said that the former Speaker of the House and North Side MLA legislator, died at the Cayman Islands Hospital, George Town after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The 71-year-old also served as Minister of Community Development, Youth, Sports and Gender Affairs between November 2000 and 2001.

Spanish oil firm signs new agreement

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC –The Spanish oil exploration firm, REPSOL, Tuesday signed a new oil exploration concession offshore agreement with Guyana. President Donald Ramotar and REPSOL’s director, Jose A. Murillas signed the four year prospecting license for the 6,525 square kilometer concession located 100 miles seawards off the mouth of the Berbice River. The two sides also signed a production sharing agreement.

Guyana receives funds to develop gold mining sector

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is assisting Guyana in building capacity in environmental management of the gold mining sector. The WWF has provided a GUY$12 million (One Guyana Dollar = US$0.01 cents) cheque to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment as part of a one- year project aimed at training miners and other stakeholders upgrade the codes of practice and assist in the distribution of mercury.

Jamaica: Searching for economic stabilization

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – At the beginning of this month, the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved new funding arrangements to help stabilize the Jamaican economy and put it on a path to economic growth. The negotiation of the funds, a so-called Extended Fund Facility (EFF) up to US$923M has taken an extended period, lasting from the period of the recent Jamaica Labour Party governments of Bruce Golding and Andrew Holness, to that of the People’s National Party government of present Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller.

Attorney General urges support for anti-money laundering legislation

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government is seeking support for the passage of amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act, warning it is in the country’s interest and should supersede political interest. Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Anil Nandlall, in an interview broadcast on the state-owned National Communication Network (NCN), said it is important for the opposition legislators to put aside their political interests and support the legislation.

Guyana preparing for SIDS conference

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana will host a multi-stakeholder consultation on Tuesday in preparation for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Adviser to the President on Sustainable Development, Science and Technology, Navin Chandarpal, says participants will discuss various issues including the recommendations from the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and that based on the outcomes of the consultation the national report will be prepared.

OAS CSEP Project Host Workshop on Energy Efficiency Designs for Office and Public Buildings in Tropical Climates

The Organisation of Amercan States (OAS) Secretariat through the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Program (CSEP) and the Energy Efficiency Working Group of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), hosted a workshop on energy efficiency designs for office and public buildings in tropical climates. The event took place at the Bay Gardens Inn in Rodney Bay from February 28th through March 1st, 2013. The CARICOM Secretariat is a Partner of the CSEP Project.

T&T AND GUYANA ENERGY MINISTERS INK MOU ON COOPERATION IN ENERGY RELATED MATTERS

The Governments of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana on 1 March 2013 signed a Memorandum of Understanding between both countries that seeks to promote greater cooperation in energy and energy related matters over the next two years.

Under the MoU, both parties will meet annually (or sooner, as mutually agreed) to review the status of the cooperation executed under the MOU, which includes support for the following areas:

New world trade supremo

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - Brazil’s ambassador to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Roberto Azevêdo, is to be approved by acclamation, as the Geneva-based organisation’s new director-general, at next Tuesday’s meeting of its general council. Dr Azevêdo is only the WTO’s second leader from the developing world in its 18 years of existence.
