IICA to provide assistance to Guyana

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, CMC – The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) says it will support Guyana in developing its trade in agricultural products. IICA Director General, Víctor M. Villalobos met with Guyana’s Agriculture Minister Leslie Ramsammy, who outlined the country’s priorities that included the development of an agrofuels unit, the establishment of programmes to combat and mitigate the effects of climate change, and compliance with international trade standards.

Regional leaders urged to back loan for LIAT

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders are being urged to support a loan application by the regional airline, LIAT, for funds to undertake a re-fleeting exercise so as to sustain its operations and improve services.
A CARICOM Secretariat statement said that regional transport ministers who met in St. Vincent and the Grenadines last week, have agreed to put forward to the regional leaders a proposal that they support the LIAT loan application to the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

CARICOM SG welcomes ruling on CCJ in St. Lucia

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General Irwin LaRocque has welcomed the ruling by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal that St. Lucia does not require to stage a referendum before it joins the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

The PetroCaribe Economic Zone proposal

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Guyana is reportedly examining a proposal to set up a PetroCaribe Economic Zone (PEZ), made by Venezuela at the PetroCaribe summit held earlier this month in Caracas and attended by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds. According to Venezuelan Oil and Mining Minister Rafael Ramírez, this initiative will widen the role of PetroCaribe beyond the provision of oil at favourable prices, allowing inter alia for the strengthening of fair trade mechanisms among participating countries.

France blacklists T&T, Dominica for not probing foreign aid fraud

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - France has drawn up a blacklist of 17 countries including Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica for not investigating foreign aid fraud, banning the use of their banks in the distribution of development funds. Agence France-Presse (AFP) yesterday reported that in addition to the Caribbean countries, Switzerland, Lebanon, Panama, Costa Rica, the United Arab Emirates, Liberia and Vanuatu have been added to the list.

CDB reviews development challenges

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - The 43rd annual meeting of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Board of Governors in St Lucia last week, had the aura of a stocktaking of the state the region’s economies, in a context of persistent difficulty being experienced by many of the member countries. Speeches by both Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, as host Chairman of the meeting and Dr Warren Smith, the President of the Bank, gave voice to what is a general concern in the region.

Guyana’s Finance Minister urges CDB to scale up lending activity to member countries

(CARICOM News Network) Guyana’s Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh has stressed the importance of the Caribbean Development Bank reversing recent downgrades to its credit rating, as he assumes the chair of the Board of Governors of the Bank over the next year. Addressing the closing ceremony of the Bank’s 43rd annual meetings just concluded in St. Lucia, the Minister said “the Bank must ensure a restoration of its credit rating and continue to guard jealously its credibility amongst the lending and rating community.

GUYANA-ENERGY- PM Hinds said PetroCaribe provide significant benefits to Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, May 27, CMC- Prime Minister Samuel Hinds says Guyana has benefitted significantly from the Venezuelan oil initiative, PetroCaribe, launched in 2005. Hinds, speaking during a special programme on the state-owned National Communications Network (NCN), said the initiative came at a time when many Caribbean countries were having difficulties in purchasing petroleum given the high global of US$150 for a barrel of crude oil.

Barbados and Guyana have to work on immigration issues -Bajan Foreign Minister

(Barbados Nation) BARBADOS AND GUYANA need to solve the immigration issues that have soured their relations from time to time, says Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Maxine McClean. She made her comment while addressing a reception marking Guyana’s 47th anniversary of independence on Friday night. Noting that the two countries had been able to generally solve a range of issue as they arose, McClean however said a special area of work needed to be undertaken by the Barbados-Guyana Joint Commission.
