CARICOM Ministers with responsibility for Environment and Climate Change, earlier this week, convened a high level meeting in St Lucia, where the Region’s position on climate change, which will be presented at the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference, was discussed.

CDB, Agri Ministry in drive to boost aquaculture

THE Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) recently hosted a workshop for staff of the Ministry of Agriculture as it seeks to support the advancement of the aquaculture sector in Guyana.
From August 17 to 21, 2015, CDB conducted a workshop on aquaculture farm management techniques for ministry employees – a training initiative that aims to revitalise the sector and improve the livelihoods of aquaculture entrepreneurs. 

Guyana strengthening cyber security against hackers, fraudsters

Guyana is moving to insulate a number of loopholes and so drastically reduce the possibility of cybercrimes ranging from website hacking to fraud, officials said Wednesday.

Experts are being trained in cybercrimes legislation and enforcement while plans are on the drawing board to enact several laws related to cyber security.

Guyana rolls out EU-funded Agriculture Policy Programme-youth, women, small farmers among beneficiaries

As part of component three of the Agriculture Policy Programme (AAP), which aims to develop enterprises, through improved market linkages, the Ministry of Agriculture, in partnership with The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), hosted a cassava and small ruminant validation seminar, today.

This event which was held at the Regency hotel, Hadfield Street, targeted farmers from across the country, sought to build capacity among the participants and engaging them on the validation of the analysis of constraints and opportunities in Guyana.

Two Caribbean countries to benefit from fisheries project

(PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC) – Two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries stand to benefit from a project to establish ecosystem-based shrimp and groundfish fisheries management in the Guianas-Brazil Shelf.

The project is a joint investment by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Responding to climate change from the grassroots up

GUNTHORPES, Antigua, Nov 7 2014 (IPS) - As concern mounts over food security, two community groups are on a drive to mobilise average people across Antigua and Barbuda to mitigate and adapt in the wake of global climate change, which is affecting local weather patterns and by extension, agricultural production.

“I want at least 10,000 people in Antigua and Barbuda to join with me in this process of trying to mitigate against the effects of climate change,” Dr. Evelyn Weekes told IPS.

Guyana seeking options to enact anti-money legislation

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Oct 1, CMC – The Guyana government says it is in the process of putting in place alternatives to address the technical deficiencies in its existing legal and financial legislative measures for the assessment of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall, who led a delegation to Miami for talks with the Americas Regional Review Group (ARRG), said this is as a consequence of the non-passage of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AMLC/FT) (Amendment) Bill. 

Guyana to Receive $31.6 Million Loan to Improve Water, Sanitation

Guyana will be receiving just under $32 million in loans to strengthen and improve access to drinking water and sanitation services.

The funding will come from a pair of sources; it includes $16.8 million from the Inter-American Development Bank along with support from the Caribbean Investment Fund of the European Union totaling $14.8 million.

Guyanese and Trinidadian nationals win CARICOM Annual 10k

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Trinidad and Tobago’s Tonya Nero won the women’s leg of the CARICOM 10K Road Race for the third time in a row, when the event came off in St. John’s, Antigua/Barbuda on Sunday June 29 2014.
Nero made it to the finish line in just over 38 minutes to claim the winning trophy along with US $1000.  Second place went to Julien Josiah of Guyana while Trinidadian Janel Nedd copped the third position.
