Encroaching sea already a threat in Caribbean

TELESCOPE, Grenada (AP) -- The old coastal road in this fishing village at the eastern edge of Grenada sits under a couple of feet of murky saltwater, which regularly surges past a hastily-erected breakwater of truck tires and bundles of driftwood intended to hold back the Atlantic Ocean. For Desmond Augustin and other fishermen living along the shorelines of the southern Caribbean island, there's nothing theoretical about the threat of rising sea levels.

First female Governor General sworn into office

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, May 7, CMC – The first ever female Governor General of Grenada was sworn into office on Tuesday with Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell saying that her inauguration serves as a “beacon of hope that can inspire a whole nation”.
Former head of the Public Service Commission, Dr. Cecile La Grenade, took the oath of office before Justice Margaret Price-Findlay and becomes the second woman to be head of state of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

Government moving to liberalise electricity sector

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Grenada says it will use funds provided by the World Bank to facilitate the liberalisation of its electricity sector as part of an initiative being undertaken by other countries within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Public Utilities Minister Gregory Bowen told Parliament that EC$1.4 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) from the World Bank would be used to facilitate the process.

Former foreign minister named ambassador to China

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Former foreign affairs minister Karl Hood, who filed a motion of no confidence in the former Tillman Thomas administration, has been appointed Grenada’s Ambassador to China.
Hood, who appeared on the political platform of the then opposition New National Party (NNP) ahead of the February 19 general election, will replace Stephen Fletcher, who has since returned home.

US provides fingerprinting equipment to Caribbean countries

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC - Grenada Monday became the second Caribbean country to receive an automated fingerprinting identification system (AFIS) from the United States as part of the efforts to assist in crime solving in the region. “Together all these islands will be able to work to help each other solve crime,” said US Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Larry Palmer. “The AFIS will enhance border security for the individual islands,” he said, noting that it will make the searching of data base with fingerprints much easier and faster.

Minister wants stronger law to deal with people who wilfully transmit HIV

ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC - Health Minister Dr, Clarice Modeste is concerned about people who are wilfully transmitting the HIV virus to others and believes that legislation should be enacted to deal with them once there is evidence that a person is being exposed to the virus as a means of revenge.
"There are those who are saying when they discover their positive status, I am not going down alone," she told the Parliament Wednesday while contributing to the 2013 budget debate.

Government hopes to stimulate sluggish economy through budgetary measures

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell presented his first national budget in six years outlining a series of measures he hopes would stimulate a sluggish economy even as he announced cuts in government expenditure for the next 12 months.
In presenting the EC$711 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) fiscal package to Parliament on Tuesday, Mitchell, who is also the finance minister, said that current revenues are projected at EC$448.2 million, while capital expenditure is projected at EC$262.4 million.

Grenada seeking Chinese help for housing

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – China has agreed to provide nearly four million EC dollars (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) to finance the final phase of a 350 housing programme across the island. An agreement has been signed between Housing Minister Delma Thomas and the Charge d’Affaires at the Chinese Embassy here, Chen Robio.
