GRENADA-TRADE-Grenada seeking to protect nutmeg and other brands

Aug 29, 2013

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada government says it intends to use the system of geographical indications together with other intellectual property tools to protect its nutmeg and other spices as it brands the commodities. Tourism Minister Alexandria Otway Noel addressing a Sub regional training workshop on Geographical Indications and Branding, said while the concept is not new, countries in the Caribbean are slow to recognise its benefits. “It seems as if the rest of the world has been slow to the use of this concept to its advantage and the Caribbean is not an exception. Apart from Jamaica with its Blue Mountain Coffee and Jerk Seasoning, no other Caribbean Territory has done any significant work in the area of geographical indications, and we have so much to celebrate in the region,” she said.
