CARICOM and Cuba Foreign Ministers get together in Grenada

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba will hold discussions on advancing cooperation on developmental issues between the two sides on Friday 6 September in Grenada. A special retreat of CARICOM’s Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), preceded Friday’s meeting.

GRENADA-DEATH-Grenada Governor General pays tribute to predecessor

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade Tuesday paid tribute to Sir Paul Scoon saying history will remember “this influential and courageous Grenadian” as a person who served his country with distinction. Sir Paul, 78, the first and longest serving head of state, died on Monday after a prolong illness. The former school teacher worked with six prime ministers, as well as establishing an interim government following the collapse of the leftwing People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) of Maurice Bishop in 1983.

GRENADA-DEATH-Grenada’s first Governor General dies

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Sir Paul Scoon, who served as Grenada’s first Governor General, died Monday. He was 78. Sir Paul, who had been ailing for some time, died at his home. He served as head of state from 1978-1992. The former school teacher worked with six prime ministers, as well as establishing an interim government following the collapse of the leftwing People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) of Maurice Bishop in 1983.

GRENADA-TRADE-Grenada seeking to protect nutmeg and other brands

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada government says it intends to use the system of geographical indications together with other intellectual property tools to protect its nutmeg and other spices as it brands the commodities. Tourism Minister Alexandria Otway Noel addressing a Sub regional training workshop on Geographical Indications and Branding, said while the concept is not new, countries in the Caribbean are slow to recognise its benefits. “It seems as if the rest of the world has been slow to the use of this concept to its advantage and the Caribbean is not an exception.

CARIFORUM DG to Visit Grenada

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Director-General of the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM), Mr Percival Marie, is set to embark on his first official visit to Grenada since that country assumed the Chairmanship of CARIFORUM, with effect from 1 July 2013.

The Chair of CARIFORUM plays a leadership role in relation to intra-CARIFORUM matters, as well as the CARIFORUM-European Union (EU) Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and its institutional arrangements.

GRENADA-DRUGS-Government urges caution as Grenadians celebrate annual Carnival

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada Drug Epidemiology Network (GRENDEN) says young people between the ages 15 and 19 years accounted for 50 per cent of the patients admitted to health institutions for the consumption of illegal drugs.

A statement from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Ecclesiastic Affairs noted also that 83 per cent of persons arrested and charged for drug related offences were within the same age group.

GRENADA-POLITICS-Government cracks down on illegal wiretapping

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has told legislators that equipment capable of intercepting communications had been purchased by the previous government.

“We found one piece that has the ability to monitor a person home from as far a half a mile away. All they needed to do was zoom into the house and listen to whatever was being discussed,” Mitchell told legislators, as Parliament debated the 2013 Interception Communications Bill.

GRENADA-ECONOMY-Parliament gives nod to Citizenship by Investment legislation

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada parliament has given the nod to the Citizenship by Investment legislation as the Keith Mitchell administration seeks to lure foreign investors to the island.

But Prime Minister Mitchell has made it clear that new regulations would be put in place to ensure that bona fide investors receive the Grenada passport as part of the initiative.

No British support to invade Grenada

LONDON, CMC – Britain had been against United States plans to invade Grenada in 1983, according to documents released Thursday by the National Archives here. The documents indicate that then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and United States president Ronald Reagan were at odds over the plans to invade the Caribbean island after its then left wing leader, Maurice Bishop and several of his ministers were executed by sections of the People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) headed by then deputy leader, Bernard Coard.

Grenada hosting conference on bird conservation

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – More than 150 delegates are in Grenada attending the 19th Regional meeting on bird conservation for the Caribbean. Organised by the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds (SCSCB), it is being held under the theme “ Bird Conservation in a Changing Climate”. SCSCB president Dr Howard Nelson President described the conference “as an invaluable opportunity share a growing body of knowledge that showed that climate change has broad far-reaching environmental impacts with both conservationists and the public at large.”
