Police warn against wearing camouflage clothing

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Grenada police Wednesday said they would adopt a zero policy stance regarding the wearing of camouflage clothing in public and warned both visitors and locals to desist from doing especially as the island gears up for the annual Carnival celebrations next month.
“The law is pretty clear about person wearing military clothes but yet Customs release them,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Edvin Martin, who also noted that not all attire being sold in shops here had entered the island through an authorize port of entry.

Grenada and China looking to improve diplomatic relations

ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada, CMC – China is promising to deepen its relationship with Grenada eight years after the Caribbean island broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Beijing’s first ever female ambassador to Grenada, Ou Boqian, said the relationship has grown over the years and “I am working to further enhance the relationship between China and Grenada”. Foreign Affairs Minister Nickolas Steele said he was confident that by the time her term of duty is over “you will be a sister and daughter of the soil”.

Yachting sector contributes EC$130M to the economy

ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The yachting sector has provided a significant boost to the economy, based on the results of a survey conducted between May 2012 and April 2013 . The survey revealed that the sector’s net contribution to Grenada was EC$130 million with repairs and maintenance is responsible for 25% of the amount. President of the Marine and Yachting Association (MAYAG), Anita Sutton said the study included three surveys – of yachts, business establishments who wholly or partially provide goods and services and individuals.

Grenadian-born legislator slams not guilty verdict in death of black teenager

NEW YORK, CMC - A Grenadian-born American legislator has joined a chorus of condemnation of a not guilty verdict by a Florida jury in the murder of an unarmed black teenager by a white neighbourhood watch volunteer. “The murder of Trayvon Martin is but the most recent example of profiling in America, a practice that is discriminatory at its best and deadly at its worst,” said New York City Councilman Jumaane Williams, who represents the largely Caribbean 45th Council District in Brooklyn, New York.

New Zealand promising to assist Caribbean

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – New Zealand is proposing assistance to Caribbean countries in several areas including renewable energy, according to the special envoy of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key. A brief Grenada government statement said that the envoy, Sir Don McKinnon met with Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell over the weekend as part of a “whirlwind Caribbean visit to meet with the leaders”.

Government clears “false and misleading” statements on Electronic Crime Bill

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada government says it is “false and inaccurate” to state that it had approved into law legislation that provides for criminal charges to be brought against anyone sending offensive messages over the internet. In a statement, the Keith Mitchell government said that it wanted to “clarify misleading comments from the Vienna based International Press Institute (IPI)” that the government had passed into law an Electronic Crimes bill.

Government withdraws controversial legislation

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada government Wednesday withdrew controversial legislation that provides for criminal charges to be brought against anyone sending offensive messages over the internet.
The Senate was due to have debated the Electronic Crimes Bill on Wednesday, but the Leader of Government Business, Kenny Lalsingh, said the Keith Mitchell administration  had made a decision to return the Bill to the Lower House pending further deliberation.

GRENADA-FINANCE-Grenada meeting its financial commitment to creditors

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada government says it is meeting its obligation to creditors because of a new strategy through which it has categorised the debt owed.
“One of the things we declared early since winning the February 19 general election was the need for debt restructuring and we began a process which now put some debts within the relief pool and some outside,” Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has said.

Model draft legislations on EPA to be discussed in Grenada

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC - Legislative drafters from Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) countries meet here on Wednesday to discuss draft model bills intended to give effect to measures contained in the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) signed with the European Union in 2008.
The meeting is being organised by the Guyana-based EPA Implementing Unit within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and is in keeping with a mandate to assist CARIFORUM states in the implementation of the provisions of the accord.
