Prime Minister calls for new regional health insurance scheme

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The 27th annual congress of the Caribbean Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (CARAIFA) began here on Monday with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit urging regional financial advisors to develop a health insurance scheme for the Caribbean. Skerrit told the more than 130 delegates from 13 Caribbean countries that the cost of medical services in the region had become very prohibitive to many families. He said people with health insurances were also expressing difficulties.

National football coached feared dead following vehicular accident

Dominica welcomes Maduro’s election victory, violence rocks Caracas

Government still confident of geothermal project

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica government Monday said it would continue discussions with the European Union and other stakeholders amid reports that a French company Electricite de France (EdF) was withdrawing from the geothermal project here. In a statement, the Roosevelt Skerrit government said that over the past six months, it has made “significant progress on the terms of an agreement with EdF and NGE, a French infrastructural development company regarding the project.

DOMINICA-ENERGY-Drought may result in higher electricity fees

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica Electricity Company (DOMLEC) is hinting at the possibility of increasing fees to consumers blaming the ongoing drought that is hampering its ability to generate electricity at its hydro facility. DOMLEC general manager Collin Cower, speaking on the company’s radio programme “Power Talk” said late last year and early 2013, the island has experienced “the right type of rainfall” so as to allow for good production from its hydro electricity plant that helped to drive the cost of fuel surcharge down.

Dominica launches ambitious water project

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Dominica Monday launched an US$7.4 million water upgrade project that the authorities said would benefit thousands of residents and consumers in the north, east and south of the country. The Mero to Castle Comfort project dubbed “The Third Water Supply Project Water Area-1 (WA-1) Network Upgrade” the project and is being funded by a US $6.1 million loan from the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Dominica government and the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO).

Authorities move against tax defaulters

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Dominica authorities say they intend to take a harder line, including legal action, against people who fail to pay taxes.
Comptroller of Income Tax Irwin Williams, speaking at the launch of the 12th annual Tax Awareness Week, said that the Inland Revenue Division (IRD) would be moving aggressively against tax evaders and defaulters.
“I think it is a fitting time to inform non compliant people that action will be taken against those who do not comply. All are encouraged to voluntarily pay their taxes when they are due.”

Survey finds Dominicans worried by unemployment issues

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Roosevelt Skerrit government has been given a passing grade as it relates to its efforts to deal with unemployment in Dominica, but the population believes it is doing a good job in education. According to a mid-term review of the performance of the government conducted by the Barbados-based consulting firm, Caribbean Development Research Services Inc. (CADRES), “Dominicans are generally most impressed with the government's performance in "Education" and least impressed with the government's performance in the area of "Employment".
