We are rapidly mortgaging our food sovereignty – George

Over the past years there has been a significant decline in traditional exports to the European Union (EU) while our extra-regional food import bill is estimated at around $3.5 to $4 billion US dollars annually.

That’s according to Acting Prime Minister Ambrose George who was at the time addressing the opening ceremony of the Climate Change and Science and Technology workshop at the Arawak House of Culture on Sunday. It was the first official event to start off the 10th Caribbean Week of Agriculture being held on  the island.

More to be done to strengthen heritage tourism, says CARICOM culture manager

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Programme Manager for Culture and Community Development, Dr Hilary Brown is of the opinion that the Caribbean needs to do more to strengthen its heritage tourism product.

She believes that “much more could be done” to develop the Region’s natural and built heritage which is an invaluable resource in building Heritage Tourism.

WORLD BANK AND GEF SIGN US$2.1 MILLION GRANT TO PROTECT COASTAL AREAS IN THE CARIBBEAN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) — The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) has been granted $2.1 million US from the World Bank through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to support a pilot adaptation program in three Caribbean Small Island States (Dominica, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines).

This was view of Prime Minister of Dominica, Hon. Roosevelt Skerritt, who briefed the media on Monday 26 June at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana during a visit to the Secretariat’s headquarters.

OECS FULLY SUPPORTS CSME, SAYS DOMINICA’S PRIME MINISTER

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Hon Roosevelt Skerritt has assured that the countries of the Organisation of the Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) “are in total support of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).”

DOMINICA LAUNCHES CARICOM PASSPORT

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Commonwealth of Dominica on Wednesday, 14 December became the fourth Member State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to launch its CARICOM passport. The official travel document, which bears the CARICOM logo and the words Caribbean Community on the cover, also carries the Coat of Arms and name of the issuing Member State.

CARICOM HEADS OF GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION LEADERS AGREE ON THE WAY FORWARD

(Caribbean Community Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Parliamentary Opposition Leaders have agreed to set up a six-member team to follow up on issues arising from their recent historic meeting in Saint Lucia and also to map the path for the way ahead.

The team will comprise three representatives on each side. The Opposition Leaders of Jamaica, Dominica and Guyana will make up the Opposition team while CARICOM Heads of Government are expected to decide on the composition of their team in due course.
