Legislators to debate whether to legalise marijuana

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – The Bermuda parliament will “soon” debate a motion to decide whether or not to legalise the use of marijuana in this British Overseas Territory.
“We will bring to the House of Assembly a ‘take note’ motion so we can have a public debate on the issue. I don’t advocate one way or the other, but it’s something we should have a debate on,” Attorney General and Justice Minister, Mark Pettingill, told the Bermuda Sun newspaper.

Premier accuses PLP of ‘schoolyard tactics’

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC -- Premier Craig Cannonier has fired back at an opposition party attack on its first 100 days in office, accusing it of "schoolyard fighting tactics".
"As the Premier, I find it amazing that the Progressive Labour Party is still resorting to schoolyard fighting tactics to provoke nonsensical dialogue, none of which will benefit Bermuda or Bermudians. While they continue to grasp at straws and propagate untruths, the world is passing Bermuda by.

National Assembly prorogued in preparation for general election

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC – The Legislative Assembly in this British Overseas Territory has been prorogued paving the way for the May 22 general elections.
Governor Duncan Taylor signed the necessary proclamation ahead of Nomination day Wednesday.
At least 40 candidates are expected to contest the elections, but Political observers say the election will be a straight fight between the ruling United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM).

Illegal Cuban migrants evade authorities

GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands, CMC– Immigration authorities here say they are investigating the escape of at least a dozen Cubans, who mysteriously arrived in Miami in what is believed to be a human trafficking ring. lara Gardiner, of the Turks and Caicos’ Ministry of Immigration and Border Control, confirmed that authorities are conducting the probe but did not know when the inquiry would be completed.

GEORGETOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC – Former premier William McKeeva Bush has been formally charged with two counts of misconduct after he was arrested late last year.
Bush, 57, who will appear in court next month, is also facing four counts of Breach of Trust by a member of the Legislative Assembly, contrary to Section13 of the Anti-Corruption Law 2008, and five counts of theft, contrary to Section .241 of the Penal Code 2007 Revision.
Bush will appear in Grand Court on April 12. The charges were laid on Wednesday as the former premier answered his bail.

Europe providing assistance to Anguilla

THE VALLEY, Anguilla, CMC – The Europe Union Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Mikael Barfod has held talks with Chief Minister Hubert Hughes and Governor William A. Harrison ahead of the disbursement of EC$13.3 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) under the island’s Medium Term Economic Strategy (MTES).
The EU is providing an overall aid package of EC$38.5 million to Anguilla to help boost economic growth and development on the British Overseas Territory.

Former minister to re-appear in court in May

THE VALLEY, Anguilla, CMC – Former home affairs minister Walcott Richardson is due to re-appear in court on May 10 on two charges of indecent assault.
Richardson, who resigned from the Hubert Hughes administration last month, has been granted EC$110,000 (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) bail.
In announcing his resignation last month, Richardson said he felt “in the current circumstances it is right for me to tender my resignation as Minister of Home Affairs at this time” while he defended his reputation against the allegations.
