Government announces new measures to reduce expenditure

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Premier Craig Cannonier has announced a 50 per cent reduction in the fleet of official cars used by cabinet ministers as his new One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) administration moves to reduce expenditure.
Premier Cannonier said while the OBA is still analysing the country's financial state, voters have clearly indicated that they “want and expect our government to be rational and organized as we face these enormous financial challenges that were inherited from the PLP (Progressive Liberal Party).

Finance Minister says ‘shared sacrifice’ needed to tackle debt

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Finance Minister Bob Richards says the new One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) government will honour a pre-election pledge not to lay off any civil servants but “shared sacrifice” is necessary to tackle Bermuda’s soaring debt.
He said government finances were "every bit as bad as we had feared" before the OBA took power a month ago.
On Wednesday, Richards said the government would seek talks with public-sector unions with pay cuts and shorter working weeks among the options on the table.

St. Lucian appointed CCRIF first full time CEO

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, CMC – The regional governments owned Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) says it has appointed St. Lucian Isaac Anthony as its first full time chief executive officer.
Anthony, a former senior public servant, has served on the boards of key regional financial institutions, including the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). He took up his new appointment from January 1.

Parliament to reconvene on February 8

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC- In the aftermath of the December 17 General election here, Parliament is scheduled reconvene on Friday, February 8. On Thursday the Cabinet Office announced that Governor George Fergusson will deliver his second Throne Speech which sets out government agenda for the year ahead -- in the space of three months. Last November, the Governor delivered the Throne Speech but parliament was then dissolved ahead of general election, which saw the ruling Progressive Labour Party (PLP) ousted after 14 years in power.

UK formally requests extradition of former TCI Premier

PROVIDENCIALS, Turks and Caicos Islands, CMC -The United Kingdom has made a request for the extradition of former Turks and Caicos Premier Michael Misick who is being held in a Brazilian jail following after his December arrest in the South American nation on an international warrant.
Under an agreement with Brazil,  the British authorities have 60 days from the date of arrest to formally request his extradition said the Turks and Caicos Islands’ (TCI) Attorney General’s office said in a statement Wednesday.

Family of former premier appeals for his return home

PROVIDENCIALS, Turks and Caicos Islands, CMC – The family of former Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) premier, Michael Misick, has launched a local and international appeal for the former head of government who is in a Brazilian jail to be allowed to return to the British Overseas Territory.
Misick, 46, was arrested last December as a result of an international arrest warrant issued by INTERPOL and a further warrant issued by Brazilian Supreme Court.

Governor reappoints three independent senators

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Governor George Fergusson has reappointed three existing independent senators to complete the 11-member Upper House team.
Carol Ann Bassett, who was Senate President in the last parliament,  will be again joined by Joan Dillas-Wright, who was Vice-President and James Jardine.
They will join the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) Government team of Michael Fahy, Nalton Brangman, Alexis Swan, Jeff Baron and Lynne Woolridge.

Premier didn’t quit UDP

In another bizarre twist to the seemingly never-ending political intrigue that has enveloped the Cayman Islands in recent weeks, it seems that Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly did not resign with the rest of her government colleagues from the United Democratic Party last weekend. Attempts to determine Ms O’Connor-Connolly’s official status within the UDP were unsuccessful by press time. The premier did not respond to repeated requests for comment about the matter throughout the week.

Caribbean Statisticians Examine Free Movement Database

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) As 2004 races to a close, Regional Officials are redoubling their efforts to ensure that Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are adequately equipped with the necessary information tools for the 2005 implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
