Curaçao joins CARICOM, pledges to leverage cultural, economic strengths

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) - Curaçao is now the sixth Associate Member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The country's prime minister said it brings a unique blend of cultural traditions, economic strengths, and social perspectives that will hopefully strengthen the Community.

CARICOM After School Activity Programme (ASAP) workshop kicks off in Anguilla

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The first of a series of workshops in preparation for the implementation of the pilot project for the CARICOM After School Activity Programme (ASAP) began on Monday in Anguilla.
The workshop which is being implemented by the Caribbean Sport and Development Agency was attended by twenty one persons consisting of teachers, coaches, sports administrators, and students from across Anguilla.

OECS environmental ministers to meet in Anguilla next week

THE VALLEY, Anguilla, CMC – Ministers of Environment and Sustainable Development from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) will meet here later this week to discuss environmental issues affecting the nine-member grouping.
The October 3 meeting will allow for the sub-region to also build on the green economy workshop held earlier this year and which examined streamlining environmental issues into development planning and decision-making, according to an OECS statement.

Bermuda set to allow cruise ships to operate casinos in port

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - While Bermuda wrestles with the thorny topic of introducing casinos to the island, cruise ship passengers could soon be allowed to gamble on board their vessels while in port.
A bill to allow in-port gambling has been tabled in the House of Assembly.
The legislation, long sought by cruise companies, would permit licensed vessels to run casinos between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. (local time) while in designated local ports.

CARICOM and Cuba look to active role in post 2015 Agenda talks at the UN

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean should take an active role at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) debate on the post 2015 Agenda.
This was the view expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana the Honourable Caroline Rodrigues-Birkett as she addressed the Opening Ceremony in Grenada of the Fourth Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba on Thursday evening. The discussions take place on Friday.

BERMUDA-EMPLOYMENT-Government insists no residency status for “guest workers”

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – The Bermuda government says it will not be renewing the work permits of “guest workers” unless they sign a declaration outlining they have no residency status in the British Overseas Territory.
Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy said that the Immigration Department would be adopting a “more aggressive” stance on the issue.

Visiting BVI official gives pointers

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - SMALL Island Developing States (SIDS) in the region have been given some pointers on how they can foster private sector partnerships, with the help of banks. Deputy Premier of the British Virgin Islands Kendrick Pickering says the BVI has developed a programme fostered and promoted through their National Business Bureau. He was speaking during a high level dialogue during the just concluded Inter- Regional Preparatory Meeting, in preparation for the Third International Conference on SIDS at the Hilton Barbados.

CAYMAN ISLANDS-POLITICS-Husband of defeated candidate appeals court ruling

GEORGETOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC – The Court of Appeal is being asked to overturn a ruling by Chief Justice Anthony Smellie that Education and Employment Minister Tara Rivers can keep her West Bay seat in the Parliament after the husband of an election rival had filed a petition challenging her nomination.

BERMUDA-TOURISM-Staff layoffs as Department of Tourism set to close

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - The government-run Department of Tourism, which employs around 40 workers here and in New York, is to be abolished on October 1 as the new independent Tourism Authority gets ready to swing into action. Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell has travelled to the United States to deliver the message to overseas staff. Staff members were told on Tuesday that they can apply for new positions with the new entity, although there are no guarantees of a job offer, or opt to be transferred to other civil service jobs.
