ECCB takes control

THE VALLEY, Anguilla, CMC – The St. Kitts-based Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) says it has assumed control of two indigenous banks in Anguilla noting the move is designed to ensure the stability of the banking system in the entire Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU). ECCB Governor Sir Dwight Venner in a statement confirmed that the operations of the Caribbean Commercial Bank (Anguilla) Limited (CCB) and the National Bank of Anguilla Limited (NBA) had been taken over.

TURKS AND CAICOS-POLITICS-Former premier denies negotiating plea bargain

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands, CMC –Former premier Michael Misick has denied reports that he is negotiating a plea bargain with British and American law enforcement authorities.

Misick, who is in a Brazilian jail awaiting extradition to the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), has dismissed the report that he is negotiating the plea bargain that would implicate United States citizens and senior politicians in Jamaica, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

No quick fix to our problems says Premier

HAMILTON, Bermuda, Jul 9, CMC - Premier Craig Cannonier has reiterated a warning that recovery for Bermuda's reeling economy, which has been in recession for more than four years, would take time and effort.
Cannonier, made the statement in a televised address late Monday as he summed up the One Bermuda Alliance's (OBA) first six months in power.

Second LIAT ATR arrives in Antigua

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Another ATR 72-600 aircraft has been received by LIAT. The 68-seater plane arrived in Antigua yesterday at 2:45 pm, a little over three weeks after the first one arrived at the VC Bird International Airport. Six more ATRs will be introduced into LIAT’s fleet and delivery is expected to be complete within a few months.

BERMUDA- DEVELOPMENT - Premier promises help to Bermuda’s second town

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Premier Craig Cannonier has pledged to give St George's, Bermuda's second town, a facelift.
On a recent fact finding tour, Cannonier, visited the town which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site,  to take a look at the town’s crumbling infrastructure.
He pledged not to let the east end get dragged further into decline, saying the condition of Bermuda's former capital was “unacceptable.”

BERMUDA-TOURISM-“Bermuda missing out on gay millions” - industry insiders

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Industry insiders believe old-fashioned attitudes about the lucrative gay marriage market are costing Bermuda millions of dollars in tourism revenue.
They have warned that Bermuda is losing out as same-sex unions become the norm in the western world, the Bermuda Sun newspaper said in its Wednesday edition.
Much of the opposition to change in Bermuda comes from the majority of the island's churches, which also are against the introduction of casinos.

BERMUDA-FINANCE-Job cuts at Butterfield Bank

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Six employees from the Operations and Custody Departments at the Bank Butterfield have been made redundant and a further ten redundancies will be made in August.
Senior Executive Vice President, Micahel Collins who made the announcement on Wednesday said there were three reasons that led to the layoffs.

BERMUDA-REGIMENT-Soldier who went AWOL for seven years is fined and returned to duty

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC -- A Bermuda Regiment soldier absent without leave for seven years has been heavily fined after being caught on his return home from overseas, authorities said.

The unnamed soldier -- one of around 100 men who have dodged their regiment duty -- was detained at the L.F. Wade International Airport when he recently returned to the island after an extended stay abroad.

BERMUDA-LABOUR-Workers tight-lipped over new contract

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – Many people including tourists were left stranded Tuesday after unionised government staff downed tools to attend a meeting to discuss a new employment contract, disrupting bus and ferry service for several hours. The workers gathered at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, for the meeting which was called by Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) president Chris Furbert. Media reports suggested that, in order to cut its huge wage bill, government has proposed a reduction in working hours and staff have been asked to take one day off, unpaid, each month.

Mission accomplished, says departing TCI governor

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos Islands — On balance, there have been good and bad hours, but more good hours than bad, says departing governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), Ric Todd, in assessing his almost two years in the British Overseas Territory. Todd is in the process of cleaning out his desk and tidying up outstanding matters in preparation for his September departure at the end of a rocky period that has tested his mettle as Britain's man in the tourism-dependent chain of islands.
