All set for CARICOM Summit

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Heads of Government of 14 Member States and two Associate Members will gather in St Vincent and Grenadines on Monday at the 25th Intersessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Suriname’s President, His Excellency Desiree Bouterse, who is the current President of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) will be attending the inauguration of President Michelle Bachelet in Chile on Tuesday. Suriname will be represented at Ministerial level.

ST. LUCIA-AGRICULTURE-FAO to assist farmers in St. Lucia and St. Vincent and thte Grenadines

CASTRIES, St.Lucia, CMC- The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), has formally agreed to help St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines as both countries continue to recover from devastation caused by torrential rains in December. During recent missions to St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, the head of the FAO’s operations in the Caribbean, formally signed livelihood rehabilitation and resilience building assistance totalling US$630,000.

CARIBBEAN-POLITICS-Regional leaders to meet in St. Vincent next week

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders meet here next week for their inter-sessional summit with Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves confirming that there is “quite a long” agenda for the two-day meeting. Gonsalves, who is also the chairman of the 15-member grouping, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the March 10-11 summit will discuss the economies of regional countries and efforts to deal with the challenges confronting them. Climate change and disaster preparedness would also be high on the agenda.

I am honoured to be here at the CARICOM headquarters in Guyana, and doubly so to chair this, the 33rd meeting of the Community Council of Ministers. I am especially grateful for the presence of so many esteemed Ministers of Foreign Affairs at this meeting. While travel between and among CARICOM states – in the best of times – can be a discouragingly tiring and time-consuming endeavour, I know that many of you departed the Republic of Cuba less than 48 hours ago, on the heels of an intense summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

The current situation in DR

• The Dominican Constitution up to 2010 recognised in principle, that in keeping with the legal principle of jus solis “all persons born in the territory of the  Dominican Republic” are Dominican citizens. However, a loophole allowed the authorities to deny the children of undocumented persons with such citizenship since they were judged to be ‘in transit’.

St. Vincent and Argentina identify areas of cooperation

cooperation KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC - Several areas for technical cooperation between Argentina and St. Vincent and the Grenadines were identified when Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves paid a five-day visit to that South American nation earlier this month.
