St. Vincent pledges continued support for Taiwan

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – St. Vincent and the Grenadines has reiterated its support for Taiwan to be recognised by various international agencies saying the Asian country has done much to improve the socio-economic well being of people in developing countries.
Foreign Affairs Minister Camilo Gonsalves, speaking at a ceremony here to mark the 102nd National Day of Taiwan on Thursday, said Kingstown remains steadfast in its political support for Taiwan that China regards as a renegade province.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - A conservation group says it has secured fund to revive an area in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) where a failed
marina project has devastated the marine ecosystem.
The project in Union Island, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was abandoned almost 20 years ago and residents of the island as well as conservationists say it has disrupted the water currents and destroyed the ecosystem.

Opposition Leader to appeal ruling against him

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Opposition Leader, Arnhim Eustace, says he will contest the ruling of the Labour Department ordering him to pay his former secretary, Rishatha Nicholls, EC$16,199.99 (One EC dollar – US$0.37 cents) in severance pay by October 18.
“We will appeal that process. We will go through that whole process,” he told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC).
Nicholls said she was not yet prepared to comment on the ruling yet.

PM Gonsalves says he doesn’t know why LIAT’s CEO resigned

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC -- Chair of LIAT’s shareholder governments, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says he does not know why Ian Brunton resigned as the airline’s chief executive officer after just one year on the job.
LIAT’s board of directors announced late September that it had accepted Brunton’s resignation, effective October 1.

St. Vincent to intensify reparations efforts against Europe early next year

NEW YORK, CMC – St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says he plans to intensify efforts in addressing the issue of Reparations for Native Genocide and Slavery when he assumes the chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) early in the new year.
“When I take over the chairmanship of CARICOM in January I hope to get letters to Europe,” Gonsalves, who is here for the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Debate, told a standing-room-only town hall meeting in Brooklyn late Saturday.

ST. VINCENT-FINANCE-Government hoping to pay public servants remaining arrears by October

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The St. Vincent and the Grenadines government says it is holding talks with public sector trade unions regarding the payment of outstanding arrears to civil servants.
Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves told reporters that his administration is seeking to pay the remaining half of the three per cent wage increase owed to public servants since January 2011.
The payment had been deferred because of the poor state of the local economy and Gonsalves, who is also Minister of Finance, said that the remaining amount could be paid in October.

ST. VINCENT-POLITICS-St. Vincent PM against military action in Syria

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The St. Vincent and the Grenadines government Monday said it was “alarmed” at the recent allegations of the use of chemical weapons in Syria and remains “deeply concerned with the spiralling humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.
But the government said it considers any external military action to be “premature”.
The United States has said it had irrefutable evidence that the chemical weapons were used by the Bashar al-Assad administration resulting in the deaths of nearly, 1500 people including more than 400 children last month.
