Taiwanese President to visit St. Kitts-Nevis

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC - President of the Republic of China Ma Ying-jeou will pay a two-day State visit St. Kitts and Nevis as part of a Latin America and the Caribbean tour next month.
A statement from the Taiwanese embassy here said that President Ma will arrive here on August 18 as part of his 12-day visit to allies in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Government and opposition disagree on boundaries

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas has defended the decision to revisit the constituency boundaries even as opposition legislators claim he is seeking to gerrymander the electoral process.
Prime Minister Douglas said that the Constitution of St. Kitts-Nevis provides for the revisiting of the boundaries every three to five years.
He told radio listeners that the main opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM) had revisited the boundaries in 1983 for the elections in 1984 and then again in 1988 for the elections the following year.

Government extends tax concessions to first time home owners

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, , CMC – The St. Kitts-Nevis government says it will extend the tax concessions granted to first time home owners as its seeks to boost growth in the construction sector and stimulate the local economy. “Over the last two and a half years, government has extended the policy which was originally due to come to an end in April of 2012. Since then, this policy to assist poor and middle class families has been further extended on two occasions and ought to have expired in July 2013,” said Information Minister Nigel Carty.

SIDF sells shares to Swiss investor

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The state-owned Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF) has sold its shares in a company involved in a resort project here for more than EC$50 million (One EC dollar =US$0.37 cents) to a Swiss investor, Information Minister Nigel Carty has announced. “The SIDF has indicated that it does not wish to be involved long-term in the resort project, and having now seen the implementation of the construction phase of the project, has recently agreed to sell its share in the project to a Swiss investor in excess of EC$50 million,” Carty said.

Opposition legislators say they will not give legitimacy to government

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Opposition legislators Wednesday said they will continue to boycott sittings of the National Assembly since they have no intention of providing legitimacy to the Denzil Douglas administration.
The six opposition legislators, claiming to be the “united elected majority” stayed away from parliament which approved an amendment to the National Assembly Election Act that Prime Minister Dr. Douglas said would improve the democracy in the twin-island Federation.

Speaker wants court ruling despite opposition withdrawing motion

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Speaker of the St. Kitts-Nevis National Assembly, Curtis Martin, says he is seeking a court ruling on certain legal matters despite public statements by opposition legislators that they have withdrawn a motion before the High Court regarding the motion of no confidence filed against the government of Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas.

Opposition accuses police of colluding with ruling party; calls for fresh polls

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The leader of the main opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM) Tuesday accused the police of colluding with the ruling St. Kitts-Nevis labour Party (SKNLP) and called for fresh general elections in the twin island Federation.
Last weekend, the police denied the PAM permission to stage a protest march in the capital on Wednesday and warned persons they would be prosecuted if they participate in any illegal march.

Prime Minister Douglas dismisses opposition statements as “mere propaganda”

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas Tuesday dismissed opposition claims that he was leading a minority government in St. Kitts-Nevis. Appearing on his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister”, Douglas told listeners that his St. Kitts-Nevis labour Party (SKNLP) administration holds a majority in the National Assembly. Six opposition legislators have already said they will support a vote of no confidence in the government and have even gone to the courts to get Parliament to debate the issue as a matter of urgency.

Police issue warnings as opposition leader plans one-man protest

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The St. Kitts-Nevis police have denied permission to the main opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM) to stage a protest march in Wednesday and warned persons they would be prosecuted if they participate in any illegal march.
PAM has already described the decision of the police “as a deliberate effort to frustrate the wishes of the people and their rights to free expression and to demonstrate.

Opposition warns of disobeying laws to stage street protests

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Leader of the main opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM), Shawn Richards, is warning that people will “ultimately take the matter to seek justice into their own hands” after the police denied a request for a march next week.
Richards said that St. Kitts-Nevis is heading towards situation where people, who believe their rights are “being trampled upon” will disobey the authorities.
