St. Kitts-Nevis PM to chair Commonwealth group on debt
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas will chair a Commonwealth high level mission on small states debt as developing countries to seek to deal with the impact of the global economic and financial crisis, Commonwealth Secretary Gerneral Kamalesh Sharma announced Tuesday.
Sharma, who is ending a two-day visit to the twin-island Federation, told a news conference that the mission, whose other members were not disclosed, will meet in Washington in October for talks with officials of key international financial institutions and other stakeholders.
Canadian minister visiting Caribbean countries
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Canada’s Minister of State of Foreign Affairs Diane Ablonezy arrives here on Tuesday as part of a visit to seven Caribbean countries. Ablonezy will hold talks with Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas during her two day visit. OAS CSEP Project Host Workshop on Energy Efficiency Designs for Office and Public Buildings in Tropical Climates
The Organisation of Amercan States (OAS) Secretariat through the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Program (CSEP) and the Energy Efficiency Working Group of the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA), hosted a workshop on energy efficiency designs for office and public buildings in tropical climates. The event took place at the Bay Gardens Inn in Rodney Bay from February 28th through March 1st, 2013. The CARICOM Secretariat is a Partner of the CSEP Project.
Political parties gearing for general election
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The two main political parties used Monday’s Labour Day celebrations to encourage voters to be prepared for a general election that though constitutionally due by 2015, could, according to political observers be held long before that deadline.
Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas, addressing a large gathering at the Allers Playing field in the St. Johnson’s Village, following the Full Confidence Labour Day Parade, told supporters that they should ensure they are registered in order to vote.
Government minister against opposition concept of national unity
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – A senior member of the St. Kitts-Nevis government has brushed aside opposition calls for a government of national unity.
"We don't want any unity government in St Kits and Nevis. We want to remain a stable country. I don’t' have to tell you what is happening in Trinidad and Tobago where unity is crumbling fast,” said Health Community and Social Development, Culture and Gender Affairs Minister Marcella Liburd.
Strong earthquake felt in Leeward islands
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck near St. Kitts and Nevis on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of death of damage on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
The U.S Geological Survey said that the quake, which occurred at 2.53 am (local time) and its epicentre was located at 17.48 degrees north and 62.14 degrees west. It had a depth of 30.4 miles and was felt in St. Kitts-Nevis, and the French island of Guadeloupe.
The Seismic Unit of the University of the West Indies said that the quake occurred west of Barbuda.
Opposition party says it will not contest seats held by former government ministers
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – Leader of the main opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM), Shawn Richards said his party will not contest the seats now held by two former senior government ministers in the next general elections.
Former deputy prime minister Sam Condor and former senior minister Dr. Timothy Harris have joined with the four opposition legislators in writing a letter to Governor General Sir Edmund Wickham indicating that they do not support the government of Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas.
PM confident of economic growth in 2013
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC - Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas Wednesday said he remains confident that the twin island federation would record near two per cent economic growth this year.
He said the 1.9 per cent growth being predicted is reasonable based on “what we have seen from the performance of the local economy, having undergone a number of structural adjustments in changes generally and the importance revenue that is being provided especially to the leading productive sector in the economy.
