PM Douglas leads on transformation of education and human resource development issues

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 11TH 2014 (CUOPM) – An urgent call has been made to transform education and human resource development in the Caribbean, has come from the region’s leading statesman and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Dr. Douglas was at the time on Monday afternoon making a presentation to the Presidents and Prime Ministers at the 25th CARICOM Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in St. Vincent on “Redefining Caribbean Education – an Urgent Imperative.”

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 9TH 2014 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has been actively participating in the 25th Inter-Sessional CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The St. Kitts and Nevis leader arrived at the Conference venue at 9:15 this morning.

BLACK HISTORY IS OUR HISTORY

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 06, 2014 (SKNIS): As part of their History Heritage Day, the History Department of the Verchilds High School recently held a concert which transported the students through time.
The journey to the past started off with a song entitled Stand Up, Defend Your Rights, a song which students said spoke volumes about the injustices of black persons and what still occurs today. 
Other performances included poetry pieces, skits, re-enactments of slave auctions and cane cutting.

Thousands of chikungunya cases in region

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March (CMC) – The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDPC) says there are reports of new cases of the chikungunya virus in the Caribbean. The ECDPC said in the past week, 293 new cases of chikungunya have been reported in the region, with confirmed ones in St Martin (French), Martinique, St Barthélemy and Guadeloupe. New cases also surfaced in Dominica and French Guyana as well as St Kitts and Nevis.

St. Kitts and Nevis condemns acts of violence in Venezuela

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 26TH 2014 (CUOPM) – The Government of St Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday reiterated its commitment to international peace and security, democracy, and the rule of law, and has expressed concerned over the violent clashes between anti-and pro-government protestors in Venezuela. 

PM Spencer says he is awaiting Court ruling before setting Antigua election date

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 21ST 2014 (CUOPM) – Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister the Hon. Baldwin Spencer says he will await the ruling of the High Court in Antigua before setting a date for general elections.

The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) reports that Prime Minister Spencer says he is anxious to set a date for general election but his hands are presently tied.

Eastern Caribbean Ministers of Finance meet in St. Kitts this weekend

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 12TH 2014 (CUOPM) - Ministers of Finance from the Eastern Caribbean will be in St. Kitts this weekend for a series of meetings.

Ministers of Finance will attend the 78th Meeting of the Monetary Council, which will be followed by a meeting between Ministers of Finance and officials of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) on Friday, 14 February.

Both meetings will be followed by a meeting of the Monetary Council and the ECCU Public Service Unions.

PM Douglas was expected to meet with Presidents of Brazil and Venezuela

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 29TH 2014 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas was expected to meet with the Presidents of Venezuela and Brazil during the margins of the Second Meeting of the Community of Latin America and Caribbean (CELA) in Havana,Cuba.

Dr. Douglas in his meeting with the President of Venezuela, His Excellency Nicolas Maduro, will formally express his government’s concern over the recent destruction by fire of the Venezuelan Embassy in Basseterre.

ECONOMIC PROSPECTS OF REGION DISCUSSED BY GOVERNOR VENNER

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 29, 2014 (SKNIS): While the region faces unprecedented “economic stagnation”, the outlook for the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) in 2014, is said to have a positive growth.

In his presentation on the Currency Union recently, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Honourable Sir K. Dwight Venner spoke of the present situation, where the Currency Union is concerned.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE ECONOMIES OF THE ECCU REVIEWED

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 29, 2014 (SKNIS): Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (E.C.C.B.), the Honourable Sir K. Dwight Venner presented a review of the performance of the economy of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) and the initiatives that have been taken to spur and sustain economic growth.

 

At Tuesday’s (January 28) presentation, Governor Venner gave a review of 2013 and the challenges faced by the member countries.
