STATEMENT BY THE HON. STEPHENSON KING, PRIME MINISTER OF SAINT LUCIA, ON FORGING CLOSER TIES BETWEEN THE CARIBBEAN AND THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY,  20 JUNE 2008,  NEW YORK, USA

I am honoured to be here at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, an institution which stands as testament to the strong historical ties between the Caribbean and the African-American community. Named after a Black Caribbean man, the Schomburg Center has been the home of Caribbean and African-American culture and history, and of all peoples of the African Diaspora, since Arturo Alphonso Schomburg, a Black man from Puerto Rico, first became associated with it in the early part of the 20th Century.

FORGING PARTNERSHIPS OUT OF COMMON OBJECTIVES :  SPEECH BY DR. THE HON DENZIL DOUGLAS, PRIME MINISTER, ST KITTS AND NEVIS, AT THE EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM OF THE NEW YORK CONFERENCE ON THE CARIBBEAN, 19 JUNE 2008, NEW YORK, USA

It is my pleasure to participate in this symposium on education and to share this panel with such distinguished speakers. This discussion could not be timelier. We in CARICOM Community are currently re-examining the scope and effectiveness of our overarching philosophy "education for all". In New York, it is clear that you are grappling with the reality of the principle of "no child left behind" especially its implications for poor black and Latino children, among whom I am sure are some descendants from the Caribbean.

STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR. DENZIL L. DOUGLAS, PRIME MINISTER OF ST. KITTS AND NEVIS, ON BEHALF OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), AT THE HIGH LEVEL PLENARY MEETING ON A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF THE PROGRESS ACHIEVED IN REALIZING THE DECLARATION OF COMMITMENT ON HIV/AIDS AND THE POLITICAL DECLARATION ON HIV/AIDS, 10 JUNE 2008, NEW YORK

Two years ago, when I had the honour of addressing this august body for the second time, I committed the Caribbean to achieving universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support services by the year 2010. It was bold pronouncement on the part of the Caribbean considering the twin problems of a region with the second highest prevalence of HIV infection in the world and limited technical and financial resources that the Region had to surmount in order to achieve this milestone.
