CARICOM prepares positions on imminent UN oceans agreement

Senior environment officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) met recently in Belize as CARICOM rationalises its position on the United Nations (UN) process to establish an international legally binding agreement on sustainable use of marine resources.

The two-day workshop held 20-22 February 2017, in Belize City, Belize, was titled, ‘CARICOM Regional Workshop on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity beyond Areas of National Jurisdiction’.

Rene Preval, two-time president of Haiti, dead at 74 – Miami Herald

Former Haitian President René Préval has died, his wife Elisabeth Delatour Préval confirmed to the Miami Herald. He was 74.

Préval, who was president during Haiti’s tragic Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake, died at home in Laboule, a neighbourhood in Port-au-Prince. His wife, who wasn’t with him, said she had spoken to him “three times” Friday morning.

“He was in excellent humour,” said Delatour Préval, who is traveling. “He asked, ‘When are you coming home?’ I refused to believe it. I cannot believe it.”

CARICOM-Republic of Korea commit to areas for closer cooperation

CARICOM and the Republic of Korea held their first high-level meeting in Jamaica on Monday with agreement on a number of areas for closer cooperation.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the meeting the two sides committed to further strengthen their ties of friendship and spirit of cooperation. They also agreed to reinvigorate a Consultation and Cooperation Mechanism which was established in 2006 to guide future CARICOM-Korea political and economic relations.

The Inaugural High-Level Meeting between the Republic of Korea (Korea) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, on 27 February 2017. The Republic of Korea was represented by His Excellency Mr. Lim Sung-nam, First Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Korea, the CARICOM Secretariat by Ambassador Manorma Soeknandan, CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General, and CARICOM Member States by Ambassadors, Permanent Secretaries and other Senior Officials of their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs. The Meeting was co-chaired by Mrs.

Caribbean female voices say there are greater roles for first ladies

 

Several women of prominence are calling for the Caribbean’s first ladies and the spouses of heads of government to be allowed more prominent roles in the development of their countries and the advancement of various causes.

The call comes on the heels of the establishment of a Caribbean First Ladies/Spouses Network (CARIFLAN) to champion the ‘Every Caribbean Woman Every Caribbean Child’ (ECWECC) initiative.

Haiti names new prime minister

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, Feb 23, CMC – President Jovenel Moise says he has appointed Dr. Jack Guy Lafontant , a professor of gastroenterology at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the State University of Haiti (UEH) as the country’s new Prime Minister.

He replaces Enex Jean-Charles, who submitted his letter of resignation earlier this month to allow the new head of state to enter into discussions with the Presidents of both Houses of Parliament for his successor, as stipulated in the Constitution.

Legal sanctions and mandates must be reinforced… for lasting results …  PM Browne

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Hon. Gaston Browne, told the Forum of CARICOM  First Ladies and Spouses of Heads of State and Government that legal sanctions and mandates by themselves would not yield lasting results, but must be reinforced by other factors. These included reliable data; coordinated policies and programmes;  men and boys in the response; and promoting evidenced-based solutions.
