CARICOM SG calls for new model for development finance

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) believes that a new model for development finance needs to be considered.

Speaking during the accreditation ceremony for the new Swedish Ambassador to the Community on Wednesday at the CARICOM Secretariat’s, Turkeyen, Guyana headquarters, CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque stated that GDP per capita should not be the principal measurement used in determining the development status of a country.

CARICOM lauds Jamaica on 55th Independence

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has lauded the distinguished contribution of Jamaica to the world as the country celebrates its Fifty-Fifth independence anniversary on 6 August 2017.

In a message to the Government and People of Jamaica, the Secretary-General said Jamaica’s development has been fueled by the “renowned creativity of its people,” since it attained nationhood.

The country has achieved significant progress while maintaining the “highest standards of democracy and adherence to the rule of law,” he added.

UN SG lauds CARICOM leadership on global issues

As CARICOM and United Nations meet in New York to discuss how the international body can better support the Region’s strategic goals, UN Secretary-General, H.E. António Guterres has lauded CARICOM’s leadership on many pressing global issues.
