CARICOM eyes key outcomes from UN climate change talks

Mitigating climate risks and building resilience against extreme weather events underpin key areas of focus for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) during the ongoing United Nations (UN) climate talks in Bonn, Germany.

The Twenty Third Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 23) is being held from 6-17 November under the presidency of Fiji.  

Statistics must play vital role in reconstruction of hurricane-hit islands – Dr. Philomen Harrison

There is a vital role for statistics to play in the reconstruction of Caribbean islands that were severely damaged by the recent hurricanes that swept through the Region, Project Director, Regional Statistics, Dr. Philomen Harrison said last week.

At the opening of several regional Statistics events in the Cayman Islands, Dr. Harrison referred to the “utter desolation” the storms left in their wake, and called for a discourse on CARICOM Small Island Development States (SIDS) and Statistics in the context of disasters.

CARICOM Energy Month launches Monday in Haiti

 

CARICOM Energy Month (CEM) gets underway on 1 November, 2017, following a launch in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Monday, 30 October, 2017. CEM is being held under the theme ‘Re-thinking Energy: Shaping a resilient Community’.

Belize to host pivotal CARICOM-Mexico Summit

The CARICOM-Mexico Summit set for Wednesday 25 October 2017 in Belize is seen as a pivotal opportunity for the Caribbean Community to strengthen cooperation with Mexico, one of the world’s largest integrated economies.

The Summit, at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza, brings together CARICOM Heads of Government and their Foreign Ministers, and the President of Mexico and his Foreign Minister.   

Commonwealth finance ministers urged to change rules to make it easier to access funds

In a powerful intervention at the Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting (CFMM) in Washington DC, the prime minister of Saint Lucia called for the rules to be changed so countries affected by natural disasters could access funds more quickly.

Over the past few weeks the Caribbean has been battered by three category five hurricanes which have left devastation in their wake. Parts of South Asia have faced floods, leading to hundreds of deaths. In Africa, Commonwealth member states have had to contend with the dual perils of mudslides and desertification.
