CARICOM moving to create the World’s first Climate Resilient Region in the year ahead – Incoming Chairman

2018 dawns for the Caribbean Community, with the prospect of seizing an opportunity out of a crisis.  As we begin the rebuilding process after the devastating hurricanes of last September, as well Hurricane Matthew, which pounded the region on October 3-4 , 2016, we do so with the aim of creating the first climate resilient Region in the world.

CARICOM records noteworthy successes in 2017 despite challenges

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The more than US$2B pledged at the CARICOM-UN Conference for long-term recovery for hurricane-affected countries and the establishment of the regional renewable energy center are among the successes CARICOM recorded for 2017 in spite of the year’s challenges.

CARICOM, Cuba Heads to meet in Antigua

 

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)      Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Republic of Cuba will hold the Sixth CARICOM-Cuba Summit in Antigua and Barbuda on Friday 8 December.

The Meeting will be co-chaired by the Chairman of CARICOM, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell of Grenada,  and the President of  Cuba, Raúl Castro.

Machine readable CARICOM Laissez Passer for CARICOM staff

Last November, a specimen of the new machine readable CARICOM Laissez Passer was introduced to representatives attending the Special Meeting of Chiefs of Immigration and Comptrollers of Customs (CICC), in Trinidad and Tobago. Heads of Immigration within the Caribbean Community received the specimen and a formal folder explaining the features and other technical aspects.

According to Deputy Secretary-General of the Community, Dr. Manorma Soeknandan, it was the first phase and there is still some work to  be done.

CARICOM lauds Suriname’s commitment to integration

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has lauded Suriname’s commitment to regional integration, particularly its championing for youth and cultural cooperation, key elements of its portfolio within the CARICOM Quasi Cabinet.

In a message to the President of Suriname, His Excellency Desiré Bouterse, on the occasion of the country’s 42ndindependence on 25 November, 2017, Secretary-General of CARICOM, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said the Community has witnessed and applauded the country’s progress over the years.

Caribbean can only ‘build back better’ with international support, urgent climate action – UN, CARICOM Chiefs and Heads of Government

New York, 21 November 2017 – In view of the urgent needs of Caribbean islands affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the “CARICOM-UN High-level Pledging Conference: Building a more Climate-Resilient Community ” mobilised a broad partnership to support reconstruction efforts, including through over US$1.3 billion in pledges and over $1 billion in loans and debt relief.
