Remarks by Ambassador David Prendergast at the National Consultation on the Revised National Poultry Policy 2023 of the Ministry of Economic Development, Planning, Agriculture and Lands, Fisheries and Cooperatives, Grenada

'We are particularly pleased by the commitment of the Government of Grenada to implementing the Region’s 25 by 2025 Initiative through its various actions. In particular, we commend the Government for prioritizing the Poultry Sector, among others, starting with the development of the National Poultry Policy.

CARICOM and Slovenia moving closer to stronger partnership

The growing partnership between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Slovenia was strengthened recently as the CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett welcomed a new ambassador of the European country to the Community.

His Excellency Iztok Mirošič presented his letter of credence to the Secretary-General who described the occasion as "a positive step” in their emerging partnership.

CARICOM extends congratulations to Guyana on its 58th Anniversary of Independence

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended congratulations to Guyana as the country prepares to celebrate its 58th Anniversary of Independence on 26th May 2024. In a Note Verbal to the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett lauded Guyana as "a leading and visionary voice on the international stage, tackling issues such as climate change, global peace and security, human rights, energy security, and inclusive development."

"The 7th Caribbean Food Security and Livelihoods Survey results provide a basis for the CARICOM 25 by 2025 initiative, a visionary initiative aimed at reducing the region's food import bill by a quarter by the year 2025. This goal is not just about economic numbers; it is a comprehensive strategy to enhance food sovereignty, bolster local agriculture, and fortify the Caribbean against external shocks.

Region raises concerns over institutional, financial capacity to confront environmental challenges

Climate change, threats to biodiversity, economic uncertainty due to external shocks, and limited institutional and financial capacity, are the key concerns of Ministers with responsibility for the Environment of the Caribbean Community.

The concerns were highlighted during the 112th Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development on The Environment and Sustainable Development which was conducted virtually on 15 May 2024.

CARICOM Trade Ministers meet in Georgetown for 58th COTED

CARICOM Ministers with responsibility for trade began a two-day meeting on Tuesday 14 May at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana.
