REMARKS DELIVERED BY AMBASSADOR IRWIN LAROCQUE, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY SECRETARY-GENERAL ON THE OCCASION OF THE PRESENTATION OF CREDENTIALS BY HIS EXCELLENCY ROSS WILLIAM TYSOE, PLENIPOTENTIARY REPRESENTATIVE OF AUSTRALIA TO CARICOM, THURSDAY 4 APRIL 2013, CARICOM SECRETARIAT HEADQUARTERS, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Excellency, allow me to begin by warmly welcoming you to the CARICOM Secretariat and to Guyana. I trust that you will be as at home here as your distinguished and much appreciated predecessor was.

These occasions are always pleasant ones, and all the more so when one is welcoming the representative of a state that has been as much a friend to the Caribbean as Australia has.

CARICOM-AUSTRALIA COOPERATION PRODUCES NOTEWORTHY SUCCESSES - SG

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Joint cooperation efforts of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Australia have contributed to the momentous achievement of a globally binding arms treaty, recently concluded by the United Nations General Assembly.

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on Thursday highlighted this feat in accepting the letters of credence of His Excellency Ross William Tysoe, Non-Resident Plenipotentiary Representative of Australia to CARICOM, at the Headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Headquarters of the Caribbean Community on the occasion of the presentation of your Letters of Credence. I can confidently state that welcoming you to the halls of the Secretariat is like inviting a close friend and neighbour over to partake in good conversation. This is because the CARICOM-Chile relationship has been accelerated, deepened, and strengthened in recent years under your President’s administration, allowing us numerous encounters at various levels.

CARICOM HAS LOYAL ALLY IN CHILE – NEWLY ACCREDITED ENVOY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) “Chile´s commitment to work together with CARICOM countries remains a firm priority.” This assurance was given by the newly accredited Plenipotentiary Representative of Chile to the Caribbean Community, H.E. Luis Fernando Ayala, who also affirmed that the Community can count on Chile as a “loyal ally and friend.”

First, allow me to express to you the warm greetings of the President of Chile, H.E. Sebastián Piñera and of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Alfredo Moreno. It is an honour to be hosted Mr. Secretary-General, here at the headquarters of the Caribbean Community. In Chile you are well known for your long standing commitment with CARICOM and the integration process of the region. Honourable Secretary General:

SG HAILS ACCELERATION OF CARICOM-CHILE RELATIONS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, on Wednesday acknowledged the acceleration of CARICOM-Chile relations which he said had been deepened and strengthened under the auspices of President of Chile H.E. Sebastián Piñera.

CHILE BESTOWS NATIONAL AWARD ON ASSISTANT SG GRANDERSON

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Government of Chile on Wednesday conferred the `Order of Bernardo O’Higgins – Grand Cross’ on Ambassador Colin Granderson, Assistant Secretary-General, Foreign and Community Relations, Caribbean Community (CARICOM), in recognition of his role in coordinating and representing the interests of CARICOM and those shared by Latin America.

EPA and CSME Standby Facilities launched

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) (The Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) Standby Facility represents a new paradigm for collaboration between Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM) States and the European Union (EU), as does the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Single Market and Economy (CSME) Standby Facility with respect to collaboration between CARICOM States and the EU.

Haiti “more involved” in the Community – President Martelly

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) President of Haiti, His Excellency Michel Martelly is spearheading his country’s deeper involvement in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) but has warned against the expectations of things happening quickly.

“It’s not like you push a button and something happens,” he said, and added that the relationship is being built through discussions, getting to know people and nurturing ties.

Comprehensive approach needed to spur regional competitiveness

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The importance of competitiveness and productivity improvements for Caribbean enterprises aspiring to take advantage of opportunities in regional and extra-regional markets was the main focus at a colloquium that brought together regional policy-makers and business leaders in Bridgetown, Barbados from March 20 to 21.

The Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA) mounted the Caribbean Exporters’ Colloquium, the culmination of a week-long suite of activities that unfolded during the inaugural Caribbean Export Week.
