SECRETARY-GENERAL ENLISTS INDIA AS ADVOCATE FOR CARICOM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has enlisted India as another of the Community’s advocates to highlight the deleterious effects of the `graduation’ of small, highly-indebted Member States away from access to badly needed international development assistance on a concessional basis.

CARICOM GETS HELP FROM JAPAN TO DEVELOP ENVIRONMENT POLICY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Environmental Policy and Action Programme is being developed with the assistance of the Government of Japan.

With financing from the Japan-CARICOM Friendship and Cooperation Fund (JCFCF), a regional, integrated policy to ensure protection of the environment and the natural resources will be developed to address selected environmental themes and economic sectors, which have been prioritised by the Community.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT CARICOM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The sustainable development of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) can be brought about only through the incorporation of research and development in all sectors of the economy and the appropriate development of human resources.

This was put forward by Ms Myrna Bernard Officer in Charge of the Human and Social Development Directorate at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat at the opening of the European Union (EU)–CARINET First Bi-Regional Dialogue Workshop at the Secretariat Headquarters, Turkeyen, Guyana.

Harnessing Standby Facility to Improve EPA Implementation

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A senior Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) official has called upon members of the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM) to make full use of a standby Facility for capacity building under the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union.

Role for EPA in Unlocking Economic Value of Region’s Cultural Industries, Sporting Sectors

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Unlocking the economic value of the cultural industries and sporting sectors of the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM) holds much promise for development prospects, especially at a time when there has been a significant reduction in traditional revenue streams. The Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) represents an important ‘key’ for the Region, in this regard.
