FAO: CARIBBEAN COUNTRIES PREPARE PROJECTS TO MOBILIZE “GREEN FUNDS”

June 14, 2018, Santiago, Chile - Fourteen countries of the Community of Caribbean States (CARICOM) will design multiple projects to mobilize resources from international sources, which will allow them to improve the resilience and adaptation of their agriculture, food systems and rural communities to change climate.

 

The projects will be possible thanks to a new fund created by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID).

 

Single ICT Space, cyber security for discussion at ICT officials’ meeting

Progress on the development of the Single ICT space in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and cyber security, are among the main areas that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) officials will discuss when they meet on 7 June.

The virtual meeting of officials that will be anchored at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana, is in preparation for a Special Meeting of Ministers of ICT in the last quarter of this year.

CDEMA implements post-Hurricane Irma legacy project in Antigua and Barbuda

Barbados — In the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria which significantly impacted the islands of the Caribbean in September 2017, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) launched the “CDEMA Legacy Project” to support the recovery and reconstruction efforts in Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, British Virgin Islands (BVI), and Turks & Caicos Islands.

Emphasis is placed on assisting single, female-headed families, the elderly, and people with physical and mental challenges.

PM of Antigua and Barbuda: Better air transport essential for regional economic resilience

The Hon. Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, has made a call for regional governments to embrace the reforms that are needed to create a sustainable air transport sector in the Caribbean. The Prime Minister was speaking at a seminar on Air Transport Connectivity and Competitiveness, hosted by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in Grenada.

Holistic approach needed to create resilient cities in the Caribbean

Building resilient cities across the Caribbean will require a holistic approach. According to Timothy Antoine, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), any approach to strengthening the Region’s ability to withstand natural disasters will require countries to focus on restructuring fiscal policies and strengthening infrastructure, and to implement psychosocial interventions.
