PM Of Barbados Proposes Change to Process of Certificate Verification

Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon. Mia Mottley, is proposing that the process to verify Certificates of Recognition of CARICOM Skills Qualification be revamped to shorten the time in which this exercise is undertaken.

This, she suggested, can be done by adjusting existing legislation to allow the burden of proof to be shifted to the applicant to swear to the authenticity of the certificate, and if later found to be fraudulent, to show cause why the document should not be revoked.

Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon. Mia Mottley, addressed the 39th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government, which opened on 4 July in Montego Bay, Jamaica and reminded of the “purpose and passion” of the integration movement.

Stating that the purpose and passion was the people, she cautioned that they, particularly the young ones, would not wait around for much longer for results. Time is “running out”, she said.

The Prime Minister singled out a number of areas for immediate action, including the single domestic space for hassle free intra-regional travel.

Mottley: Time to act is now

The region’s young people will not wait another ten years nor will they forgive present leaders for procrastination or lack of courage.

CARICOM Heads Begin Three-Day Meeting Today

The 39th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) takes place at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James from July 4-6 under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.

The opening ceremony began at 4:00 pm on Wednesday (July 4) with presentations from Prime Minister Holness; outgoing CARICOM Chairman, President Jovenel Moise of Haiti; and CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.

CARICOM Council for Planning and Finance Meets

The CARICOM Council for Finance and Planning (COFAP), which has responsibility for economic policy coordination and financial and monetary integration, met Wednesday morning in Montego Bay, Jamaica, ahead of the 39th CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting.

The Council, comprising Finance and Economic Development Ministers, will present its economic policy recommendations to the Heads for deliberation during their 4-6 July Meeting.
